Hadith #1924

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

الجاهِلُ مَنْ أطاعَ هَواهُ في مَعصيَةِ رَبِّهِ۔

This Hadith highlights the concept of ignorance and its manifestation in a person who follows their own whims and desires, thereby disobeying their Lord.

Let us delve into the key words of this Hadith to gain a deeper understanding. The term "الجاهِلُ" refers to an ignorant person. It encompasses not only the lack of knowledge but also the lack of understanding and wisdom. It denotes someone who is unaware of the consequences of their actions and lacks the guidance of divine knowledge.

The word "أطاعَ" means to obey or follow. In this context, it signifies the act of submitting to and complying with one's desires. It implies that the ignorant person is driven by their base desires and inclinations, rather than adhering to the commandments and guidance of their Lord.

The term "هَواهُ" refers to vain desires or whims. It represents the fleeting and temporary desires that arise from the ego and the lower self. These desires are often self-centered and can lead a person astray from the path of righteousness.

Lastly, "مَعصيَةِ رَبِّهِ" translates to disobedience to one's Lord. It encompasses any action or behavior that goes against the commandments and teachings of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). It includes both major sins and minor transgressions.

To understand the wise message of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Jathiya (45:23):

Have you seen he who has taken as his god his [own] desire, and Allah has sent him astray due to knowledge and has set a seal upon his hearing and his heart and put over his vision a veil? So who will guide him after Allah? Then will you not be reminded?

This verse highlights the consequences of following one's desires instead of seeking knowledge and guidance from Allah. It emphasizes that those who prioritize their own whims over the commandments of their Lord will be led astray and deprived of true understanding and guidance.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Qasas (28:50), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) warns against following desires:

But if they do not respond to you - then know that they only follow their [own] desires. And who is more astray than one who follows his desire without guidance from Allah? Indeed, Allah does not guide the wrongdoing people.

This verse emphasizes the futility of following one's desires without seeking guidance from Allah. It highlights that those who prioritize their own desires over divine guidance are misguided and prone to wrongdoing.

Reflecting on the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) in light of these Quranic verses, we understand that an ignorant person is not merely someone lacking knowledge, but rather someone who allows their base desires to dictate their actions. Such a person disregards the guidance of their Lord and falls into disobedience.

The consequences of following one's vain desires are severe. It leads to spiritual blindness, a sealing of the heart, and a veiling of one's vision. This ignorance and heedlessness can only be rectified by seeking knowledge, guidance, and adhering to the commandments of Allah.

As Muslims, we must strive to overcome our base desires and seek knowledge and guidance from the Quran and the teachings of the Prophet (ﷺ) and his Ahl al-Bayt. By doing so, we can avoid the pitfalls of ignorance and disobedience and attain true understanding and righteousness.

May Allah (تَبَارَكَ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom and strength to overcome our desires and follow His guidance. May He protect us from ignorance and bless us with true knowledge and understanding.
