المُحْسِنُ حَيٌّ وإنْ نُقِلَ إلى مَنازِلِ الأمْواتِ۔
The benevolent one is alive, even if he is transferred to the dwellings of the dead.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: The Good Doer)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
In this profound Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), he states,
The benevolent one is alive, even if he is transferred to the dwellings of the dead.
This statement holds deep meanings and requires a careful analysis in light of the Quran.
The word (al-muhsin) "المُحْسِنُ" refers to someone who performs acts of goodness and righteousness. It encompasses the concept of doing good deeds and treating others with kindness, compassion, and generosity. The word (hayy) "حَيٌّ" means alive, indicating that the one who performs acts of goodness is spiritually alive, regardless of their physical state or location. And the phrase (in nuqila ila manazil al-amwat)
إنْ نُقِلَ إلى مَنازِلِ الأمْواتِ
translates to
even if he is transferred to the dwellings of the dead,
emphasizing that the state of being spiritually alive transcends physical circumstances.
This Hadith aligns with the teachings of the Quran, which repeatedly emphasizes the importance of performing good deeds and the everlasting rewards they bring. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:277),
Indeed, those who believe and do righteous deeds and establish prayer and give zakah will have their reward with their Lord, and there will be no fear concerning them, nor will they grieve.
This verse highlights the significance of righteous actions and assures believers that their efforts will be rewarded by Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).
Furthermore, the Quran teaches us that the righteous are not limited by physical boundaries or circumstances. In Surah Al-Imran (3:169), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,
And never think of those who have been killed in the cause of Allah as dead. Rather, they are alive with their Lord, receiving provision.
This verse reminds us that those who sacrifice their lives for the sake of Allah are spiritually alive and continue to receive sustenance from Him. Similarly, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes that the spiritually alive are not bound by physical limitations, and their good deeds continue to benefit them even after death.
The consequences of understanding and internalizing this Hadith are profound. It reminds us that our actions have a lasting impact and that the true measure of our existence lies in the goodness we bring to the world. It encourages us to strive for righteousness and to be mindful of our deeds, knowing that they have the power to keep us spiritually alive even after we have passed away.
Reflecting on this Hadith, we are motivated to engage in acts of kindness, charity, and compassion towards our fellow Muslims and humanity at large. We are inspired to be agents of positive change, knowing that our efforts will continue to bear fruit long after we are gone. This Hadith also serves as a reminder that death is not the end, but rather a transition to a different realm where our good deeds will continue to benefit us.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us that the spiritually alive are not limited by physical circumstances or even death itself. The one who performs acts of goodness remains spiritually alive, and their deeds continue to have a positive impact even after they have passed away. This Hadith aligns with the teachings of the Quran, which emphasize the importance of righteous actions and assure believers of the everlasting rewards they bring. May we all strive to be among the spiritually alive by engaging in acts of goodness and righteousness, and may Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the ability to leave a lasting positive legacy.
