لَوْ لَمْ يَتَوَعَّدِ اللهُ عَلَى مَعْصِيَةٍ لَكَانَ يَجِبُ أَنْ لاَ يُعْصَى شُكْراً لِنِعَمِهِ۔
Even if Allah had not warned of chastisement on those disobedient to Him, it would be obligatory by way of gratefulness for His favours that He should not be disobeyed.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Nahj al-Balagha — Peak of Eloquence: Hadith #290)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The provided Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the importance of obedience to Allah, even if there were no warnings of punishment for disobedience. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), known for his deep knowledge and understanding of Islam, highlights the concept of gratitude towards Allah's blessings. Let us delve into the exegesis of this thought-provoking Hadith in light of the Quran.
The key words in this Hadith are (tawaddi) "تَوَعَّدِ" which means "to warn" or "to threaten," and (ma'siyatin) "مَعْصِيَةٍ" which means "disobedience." Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) is stating that even if Allah had not warned us of the consequences of disobedience, it would still be obligatory upon us to refrain from disobeying Him out of gratitude for His countless blessings.
This concept of gratitude and obedience can be found throughout the Quran. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) repeatedly emphasizes the importance of showing gratitude for His favors. In Surah Ibrahim, Allah says, (Quran 14:7)
And [remember] when your Lord proclaimed, 'If you are grateful, I will surely increase you [in favor]; but if you deny, indeed, My punishment is severe.'
Furthermore, the Quran teaches us that obedience to Allah is a means of expressing gratitude for His blessings. In Surah Al-Baqarah, Allah says, (Quran 2:83)
And [recall] when We took the covenant from the Children of Israel, [enjoining upon them], 'Do not worship except Allah; and to parents do good and to relatives, orphans, and the needy. And speak to people good [words] and establish prayer and give zakah.' Then you turned away, except a few of you, and you were refusing.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) is reminding us that our obedience to Allah should not be contingent upon the fear of punishment alone. Rather, it should stem from a deep sense of gratitude for the countless blessings that Allah has bestowed upon us. We should recognize that every breath we take, every moment of our existence, and every blessing we enjoy is a gift from Allah. Therefore, it is our duty to show our gratitude by obeying His commands.
By refraining from disobedience out of gratitude, we not only fulfill our obligations towards Allah, but we also cultivate a deeper connection with Him. This connection leads to spiritual growth, inner peace, and a sense of purpose in life. It also protects us from the harmful consequences of disobedience, both in this world and the hereafter.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement serves as a powerful reminder for all Muslims. We should strive to embody the spirit of gratitude in our daily lives and let it be the driving force behind our obedience to Allah. Let us remember that our acts of worship, whether it be prayer, fasting, charity, or any other form of obedience, should be motivated by a deep sense of gratitude for Allah's blessings.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us that obedience to Allah is not merely a response to the fear of punishment, but rather a reflection of our gratitude for His countless blessings. By refraining from disobedience out of gratitude, we strengthen our connection with Allah and experience the true essence of worship. May Allah grant us the ability to be grateful and obedient servants, and may He shower His blessings upon us.
