Hadith #2111

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. Blessings and peace be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "لايَغْلِبِ الحِرصُ صَبْرَكُمْ۔" This can be translated as,

Do not let greed overpower your patience.

In this thought-provoking saying, Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) advises Muslims to guard against the negative influence of greed and to maintain their patience in all situations.

To fully understand the significance of this Hadith, let us delve into the meanings of some key words. (al-hirsu) "الحِرصُ" refers to greed, a strong desire for wealth, power, or possessions. It is a quality that can lead individuals to act selfishly and disregard the rights of others. (sabrakum) "صَبْرَكُمْ" means patience, the ability to remain steadfast and composed in the face of difficulties and temptations.

The Quran provides us with numerous verses that emphasize the importance of patience and warn against the dangers of greed. In Surah Al-Baqarah, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says, (2:155)

And We will surely test you with something of fear and hunger and a loss of wealth and lives and fruits, but give good tidings to the patient

This verse highlights the inevitability of trials and tribulations in life and encourages Muslims to remain patient during such challenging times.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Qasas, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states, (28:77)

And seek by means of what Allah has given you the home of the Hereafter, and [yet], do not forget your share of the world. And do good as Allah has done good to you. And desire not corruption in the land. Indeed, Allah does not like corrupters

This verse reminds us that while we should strive for success in the Hereafter, we should not neglect our responsibilities in this world. It cautions against excessive greed and encourages Muslims to strike a balance between their worldly pursuits and their spiritual obligations.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) advice to not let greed overpower our patience has profound implications for our daily lives. Greed can manifest in various forms, such as an insatiable desire for wealth, an excessive craving for power, or an overwhelming need for recognition. When we allow greed to take control, it can lead us to make unethical choices, harm others, and neglect our spiritual well-being.

Patience allows us to remain content with what we have, to be grateful for the blessings bestowed upon us, and to trust in Allah's (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) divine wisdom and timing. It enables us to endure hardships with grace and to persevere in the face of adversity.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) guidance serves as a reminder for Muslims to prioritize their spiritual growth and moral values over materialistic pursuits. When we let greed overpower our patience, we become consumed by worldly desires and lose sight of our ultimate purpose in life. However, when we cultivate patience and restrain our greed, we are able to lead more balanced and fulfilling lives, focusing on the well-being of ourselves and others.
