(Ghurar al-Hikam: Good Turns And Benevolent Actions)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
أفْضِلْ عَلَى النّاسِ يَعْظُمْ قَدْرُكَ۔
This can be translated as,
Bestow favours on the people and your status will increase.
Let us delve into the deeper meaning of this enlightening Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) and explore its significance in light of the Quran.
The word (afdhil) "أفْضِلْ" in the Hadith refers to bestowing or granting favors. It implies going above and beyond the call of duty to help others and to be kind and generous towards them. This act of benevolence is not limited to material possessions but also includes offering emotional support, guidance, and compassion to those in need.
The phrase (ala al-nas) "عَلَى النّاسِ" means "upon the people." It emphasizes the importance of extending these favors to all individuals, regardless of their social status, race, or religion. It encourages Muslims to be inclusive and to treat everyone with kindness and respect.
The term (ya'dhum) "يَعْظُمْ" signifies the increase or elevation of one's status. By bestowing favors upon others, one's own worth and esteem are elevated in the eyes of people. This elevation is not merely a worldly recognition but also a spiritual one, as it reflects the character and values of a true believer.
The Quran provides numerous verses that support the essence of this Hadith. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:195),
And spend in the way of Allah and do not throw [yourselves] with your [own] hands into destruction [by refraining]. And do good; indeed, Allah loves the doers of good.
This verse emphasizes the importance of spending in the way of Allah and doing good deeds. By giving to others and performing acts of kindness, we not only benefit those in need but also earn the love and pleasure of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). Our status is elevated in the sight of Allah and in the eyes of the people around us.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Hadid (57:11), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states,
Who is it that would loan Allah a goodly loan so He may multiply it for him many times over? And it is Allah who withholds and grants abundance, and to Him you will be returned.
This verse highlights the concept of giving generously and lending to Allah a goodly loan. When we selflessly give to others, we are essentially lending to Allah, and He promises to multiply our rewards manifold. This multiplication of blessings not only includes material wealth but also encompasses an increase in our status and honor.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith encourages Muslims to be selfless and to prioritize the well-being of others. By bestowing favors upon people, we not only fulfill our duty as believers but also witness the positive consequences of our actions. When we genuinely help others, we create a ripple effect of goodness and inspire others to do the same.
Moreover, this Hadith serves as a reminder of the noble character of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) himself. Known for his immense knowledge and wisdom, he exemplified the teachings of the Quran through his actions. His life serves as a testament to the importance of selflessness, compassion, and generosity.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) reminds us of the significance of bestowing favors upon others. By doing so, we not only increase our own status but also contribute to the betterment of society. Let us strive to emulate the noble teachings of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) and fulfill our duty as Muslims by being kind, generous, and compassionate towards all. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) guide us on this path and grant us success in this world and the hereafter.
