Hadith #4819

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The provided Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) advises Muslims to avoid extravagance and wastefulness. The word (sarafa) "سَرَفَ" in Arabic refers to excessive spending or indulgence in luxury beyond what is necessary or reasonable. The word (musrif) "مُسْرِفَ" refers to someone who engages in such extravagance. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) warns that the generosity of the extravagant is not praiseworthy, and their indigence or poverty is not deserving of sympathy.

Similarly, in Surah Al-Isra (17:29), Allah warns against extravagance, saying,

And do not make your hand [as] chained to your neck or extend it completely and [thereby] become blamed and insolvent.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) advice to eschew extravagance is rooted in wisdom and practicality.
