(Ghurar al-Hikam: Negligence)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

In this profound Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), he advises us to awaken from our negligence, reduce our hastiness, brace ourselves, be on our guard, and remember our grave. Let us delve into the deeper meaning of each of these words and reflect upon the guidance they offer.

The word (your negligence) "غَفْلَتِكَ" refers to being heedless and unaware of the reality of our existence. It is a state of forgetfulness and inattentiveness towards our purpose in life. The Quran reminds us in Surah Al-Hashr (59:18) that we should not be like those who forget Allah and, as a result, Allah causes them to forget their own selves. This negligence can lead us astray and prevent us from fulfilling our duties as Muslims.

To reduce our hastiness, Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) advises us to (reduce your hastiness) "اخْتَصِرْ مِنْ عَجَلَتِكَ". This refers to the impulsive and impatient nature that often leads us to make hasty decisions without considering the consequences. The Quran reminds us in Surah Al-Isra (17:11) to not walk upon the earth arrogantly, for we cannot tear the earth apart, nor can we reach the mountains in height. This verse teaches us the importance of patience and taking measured steps in our actions.

The word (brace yourself) "أزْرَكَ" signifies the need to strengthen ourselves physically, mentally, and spiritually. It is a call to fortify our resolve, to be steadfast in the face of challenges and temptations. The Quran reminds us in Surah Al-Imran (3:200) to be patient and steadfast and to compete in doing good deeds. This verse emphasizes the importance of inner strength and perseverance in our journey towards righteousness.

Being on our guard is another crucial aspect highlighted by Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) in this Hadith. (be on your guard) "خُذْ حِذْرَكَ" urges us to be vigilant and cautious in our actions and interactions. The Quran advises us in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:197) to take provisions for our journey, both physical and spiritual, and to be mindful of Allah in all our affairs. This verse emphasizes the need for mindfulness and awareness of our surroundings, as well as the importance of seeking protection from potential harm.

Finally, Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) reminds us to remember our grave, for indeed we must pass through it. This serves as a powerful reminder of our mortality and the transient nature of this worldly life. The Quran reminds us in Surah Al-Mulk (67:2) that Allah created life and death to test us and see who among us is best in deeds. Reflecting on the reality of death helps us prioritize our actions and strive for eternal success in the hereafter.

In conclusion, this Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a profound reminder for all Muslims to awaken from our negligence, reduce our hastiness, brace ourselves, be on our guard, and remember our grave. These teachings are rooted in the Quranic principles of mindfulness, patience, strength, and remembrance of the hereafter. By internalizing these lessons and implementing them in our daily lives, we can strive to become better Muslims and fulfill our purpose in this world. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the ability to heed this advice and lead a life pleasing to Him.
