لاشِفاءَ لِمَن كَتَمَ طَبيبَهُ داءَهُ۔
There is no cure for the one who hides his ailment from his doctor.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Remedy And Ailment)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. Peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
لاشِفاءَ لِمَن كَتَمَ طَبيبَهُ داءَهُ۔
This thought-provoking saying emphasizes the importance of seeking medical help and not concealing one's illness from the doctor. Let us delve into the deeper meaning of this hadith in light of the Quran.
The word (shifa'a) "شِفاءَ" in Arabic refers to healing or cure. It implies the restoration of health and well-being. The word (katama) "كَتَمَ" means to hide or conceal, while (tabibahu) "طَبيبَهُ" refers to the doctor or physician. Lastly, (da'ahu) "داءَهُ" signifies the ailment or disease.
This hadith highlights the significance of seeking medical assistance and not hiding one's illness from the doctor. It emphasizes the importance of being open and honest about one's health condition in order to receive the appropriate treatment and care. By concealing their ailment, individuals deprive themselves of the cure that could potentially alleviate their suffering.
The Quran also emphasizes the importance of seeking remedies and cures for ailments. In Surah An-Nahl, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says, (Quran 17:82)
And We send down of the Quran that which is healing and mercy for the believers
This verse highlights the healing properties of the Quran, indicating that seeking remedies and cures is a part of our faith.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Isra, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says, (Quran 26:80)
And when I am ill, it is He who cures me
This verse emphasizes that Allah is the ultimate source of healing and cure. However, it does not negate the importance of seeking medical assistance. Rather, it encourages us to utilize the means and resources available to us, including medical professionals, in order to attain healing.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement in this hadith serves as a reminder that concealing one's ailment from the doctor is counterproductive. By doing so, individuals not only hinder their own recovery but also risk exacerbating their condition. Seeking medical help allows doctors to diagnose and treat the ailment effectively, leading to a higher chance of recovery.
Moreover, this hadith highlights the importance of trust and communication between the patient and the doctor. By openly discussing their symptoms and concerns, patients provide doctors with the necessary information to make accurate diagnoses and develop appropriate treatment plans. This trust and communication are essential for the doctor-patient relationship to flourish and for the patient to receive the best possible care.
In conclusion, the hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the importance of seeking medical assistance and not concealing one's illness from the doctor. It reminds us that seeking remedies and cures is not only a physical necessity but also a spiritual obligation. By seeking medical help and being open about our ailments, we increase our chances of receiving the appropriate treatment and experiencing healing. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us all good health and guide us to make wise decisions regarding our well-being.
