صَوْمُ النَّفْسِ عَنْ لَذّاتِ الدُّنيا أنْفَعُ الصِّيامِ۔
Fasting of the soul from the pleasures of this world is the most beneficial fasting.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Fasting)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The provided Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the importance of fasting not only in its physical form but also in its spiritual essence. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states that the fasting of the soul from the pleasures of this world is the most beneficial form of fasting.
To understand the connotation of this Hadith, let us delve into the key words and their implications. The word (sawm) "صَوْمُ" refers to fasting, which is a well-known act of worship in Islam. It involves abstaining from food, drink, and other physical desires from dawn until sunset during the month of Ramadan. However, Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) expands the concept of fasting beyond its physical aspect and highlights its spiritual dimension.
The term (an-nafs) "النَّفْسِ" refers to the soul or the self. It represents the innermost essence of a person, including their desires, emotions, and inclinations. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) encourages Muslims to fast their souls, which means restraining and controlling the desires and pleasures of this worldly life. This includes not only refraining from sinful acts but also abstaining from excessive indulgence in worldly pleasures that may distract us from our spiritual growth and connection with Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).
To further understand the significance of fasting the soul, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:183),
O you who have believed, decreed upon you is fasting as it was decreed upon those before you that you may become righteous.
This verse emphasizes that the purpose of fasting is to attain righteousness and piety. By fasting the soul, we detach ourselves from the temporary pleasures of this world and focus on our spiritual growth, seeking closeness to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Ankabut (29:45), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states,
Recite, [O Muhammad], what has been revealed to you of the Book and establish prayer. Indeed, prayer prohibits immorality and wrongdoing, and the remembrance of Allah is greater. And Allah knows that which you do.
This verse highlights the connection between prayer and fasting the soul. Just as prayer helps in restraining oneself from immoral acts, fasting the soul aids in abstaining from the pleasures and distractions of this world, enabling us to focus on the remembrance of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and His commandments.
By fasting the soul, we develop self-discipline, self-control, and a heightened awareness of our actions and intentions. We become more conscious of our choices and strive to align them with the teachings of Islam. Fasting the soul also cultivates gratitude and contentment, as we learn to appreciate the blessings bestowed upon us by Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and avoid excessive attachment to worldly possessions and desires.
Moreover, fasting the soul has profound consequences on our spiritual journey. It purifies our hearts and strengthens our relationship with Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). It enables us to overcome our lower desires and elevate our souls towards higher levels of spirituality. By abstaining from the pleasures of this world, we detach ourselves from its transient nature and focus on the eternal rewards promised by Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the importance of fasting the soul from the pleasures of this world. It encourages Muslims to go beyond the physical act of fasting and delve into its spiritual essence. By restraining our desires and focusing on our spiritual growth, we can attain righteousness, strengthen our relationship with Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ), and ultimately benefit our souls. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the ability to fast our souls and attain His pleasure.
