Verily, renunciation of worldly pleasures means shortening aspirations, being grateful for blessings and keeping away from that which is forbidden; and if this [practice] leaves you then let not the forbidden overcome your patience and do not forget to be thankful for your blessings, for Allah, the Glorified, has left no room for excuse through manifest and clear proofs and books that are open and unambiguous.

(Ghurar al-Hikam: Renunciation Of Worldly Pleasures)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The provided Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the importance of renunciation of worldly pleasures, gratitude for blessings, and avoiding what is forbidden. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) begins by stating that renunciation of worldly pleasures leads to shortening aspirations. This means that when one refrains from excessive attachment to material possessions and desires, their hopes and ambitions become more focused and limited. By detaching ourselves from the transient nature of worldly pleasures, we become more content with what we have and set our sights on higher spiritual goals.
The concept of renunciation is emphasized in the Quran as well. In Surah Al-Hadid (57:20), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,
Know that the life of this world is only play and amusement, pomp and mutual boasting among you, and rivalry in respect of wealth and children. It is like a rain whose vegetation pleases the tillers; then it withers and you see it turn yellow; then it becomes straw.
This verse reminds us that the pleasures and attractions of this world are temporary and fleeting. True success lies in focusing on the eternal and everlasting rewards of the Hereafter.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) then advises us to be grateful for the blessings bestowed upon us. Gratitude is a fundamental aspect of faith and is repeatedly emphasized in the Quran. In Surah Ibrahim (14:7), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,
And [remember] when your Lord proclaimed, 'If you are grateful, I will surely increase you [in favor]; but if you deny, indeed, My punishment is severe.'
Gratitude not only pleases Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ), but it also brings about an increase in blessings and favors from Him. By acknowledging and appreciating the blessings we have been granted, we cultivate a positive mindset and develop a deeper sense of contentment and satisfaction.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) further advises us to stay away from what is forbidden. This includes refraining from engaging in actions that are prohibited by Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and His Messenger (ﷺ). By avoiding what is forbidden, we protect ourselves from the spiritual and moral harm that such actions bring. In Surah Al-A'raf (7:157), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,
Those who follow the Messenger, the unlettered prophet, whom they find written in what they have of the Torah and the Gospel, who enjoins upon them what is right and forbids them what is wrong and makes lawful for them the good things and prohibits for them the evil and relieves them of their burden and the shackles which were upon them. So they who have believed in him, honored him, supported him and followed the light which was sent down with him - it is those who will be the successful.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) warns us that if we neglect these principles of renunciation, gratitude, and avoidance of the forbidden, we risk losing our patience and falling into sinful behavior. It is essential to remain steadfast and patient in the face of temptations and trials. In Surah Al-Baqarah (2:153), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,
O you who have believed, seek help through patience and prayer. Indeed, Allah is with the patient.
By maintaining our patience and relying on Allah's guidance, we can overcome the allure of the forbidden and remain on the straight path.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) concludes by reminding us not to forget to express gratitude for our blessings. It is easy to become complacent and take our blessings for granted. However, we must remember that every blessing we enjoy is a gift from Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). In Surah An-Nahl (16:18), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,
And if you should count the favors of Allah, you could not enumerate them. Indeed, Allah is Forgiving and Merciful.
By acknowledging and expressing gratitude for our blessings, we not only fulfill our duty as Muslims but also strengthen our relationship with Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).
In this Hadith, Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) reminds us of the importance of renunciation, gratitude, and avoidance of the forbidden. By practicing these principles, we can attain spiritual growth, contentment, and protection from sinful behavior. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) guide us all to follow the teachings of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) and grant us the strength to implement these principles in our lives.
