Hadith #2194

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the qualities of a judicious person. Let us delve into the meaning of some important words in this Hadith to gain a deeper understanding.

The word (hazim) "حازِمُ" refers to someone who is judicious, decisive, and firm in their actions. They possess a strong determination and are resolute in their pursuit of righteousness. This quality is essential for a Muslim to navigate through the challenges of life.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) then describes the characteristics of a truly judicious person. Firstly, their (shughl) "شُغْلِ" or preoccupation is solely with themselves. This means that they prioritize self-reflection and self-improvement. They are aware of their own flaws and constantly strive to rectify them. They do not waste their time and energy in futile pursuits, but rather focus on their personal growth and development.

Secondly, their (hamm) "هَمِّ" or concern is entirely for their religion. This implies that their primary focus is on their faith and the practice of Islam. Their heart is filled with love for Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and they are deeply committed to fulfilling their religious obligations. They seek knowledge, engage in acts of worship, and strive to live their lives in accordance with the teachings of the Quran and the Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ).

Lastly, their (jidd) "جِدِّ" or struggle is entirely for their Hereafter. They are fully aware of the transient nature of this world and the eternal nature of the Hereafter. They prioritize their actions and efforts based on their consequences in the afterlife. They strive to accumulate good deeds, avoid sins, and constantly seek forgiveness from Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). Their ultimate goal is to attain Paradise and the pleasure of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).

To further understand the significance of these qualities, let us turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Hashr (59:18-19):

O you who have believed, fear Allah. And let every soul look to what it has put forth for tomorrow - and fear Allah. Indeed, Allah is Acquainted with what you do. And be not like those who forgot Allah, so He made them forget themselves. Those are the defiantly disobedient.

These verses emphasize the importance of self-reflection and accountability. A judicious person is constantly aware of their actions and their consequences. They do not forget Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and neglect their duties towards Him. Instead, they strive to improve themselves and seek forgiveness for their shortcomings.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:197), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says:

And take provisions, but indeed, the best provision is Taqwa (piety). So fear Me, O you of understanding.

This verse highlights the importance of prioritizing our religion over worldly matters. The provision for our journey in this life is not material wealth or possessions, but rather piety and consciousness of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). A judicious person understands this and directs their efforts towards attaining Taqwa and seeking the pleasure of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us the qualities of a judicious person. They prioritize self-reflection, focus on their religion, and strive for their Hereafter. By embodying these qualities, we can lead a purposeful and meaningful life, seeking the pleasure of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and preparing for our eternal abode. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom and strength to embody these qualities and be among the judicious ones.
