(Ghurar al-Hikam: Secret And Confidential Discussions)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure Ahl al-Bayt, and his noble companions.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

The basis of a secret is its concealment.

This thought-provoking saying emphasizes the importance of keeping secrets hidden and not disclosing them to others. Let us delve deeper into the meaning of this Hadith in light of the Quran.

The word "milak" in Arabic refers to the foundation or basis of something, while "sirr" means secret or hidden knowledge. The word "sitr" means to cover or conceal. Therefore, the Hadith teaches us that the essence of a secret lies in its concealment. It is essential to keep secrets hidden and not reveal them to others.

This teaching is in line with the Quranic principles of privacy and confidentiality. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Hujurat (49:12),

O you who have believed, avoid much [negative] assumption. Indeed, some assumption is sin. And do not spy or backbite each other. Would one of you like to eat the flesh of his brother when dead? You would detest it. And fear Allah; indeed, Allah is Accepting of repentance and Merciful.

This verse highlights the importance of avoiding assumptions and not prying into the affairs of others. It teaches us to respect the privacy of individuals and not engage in gossip or backbiting. By keeping secrets concealed, we uphold the principles of trust, respect, and dignity.

Furthermore, the Quran emphasizes the importance of guarding one's secrets in Surah Al-Mu'minun (23:62), where Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,

And We have enjoined upon man, to his parents, good treatment. His mother carried him with hardship and gave birth to him with hardship, and his gestation and weaning [period] is thirty months. [He grows] until, when he reaches maturity and reaches [the age of] forty years, he says, 'My Lord, enable me to be grateful for Your favor which You have bestowed upon me and upon my parents and to work righteousness of which You will approve and make righteous for me my offspring. Indeed, I have repented to You, and indeed, I am of the Muslims.'

This verse highlights the importance of gratitude and righteousness towards parents and the need to keep one's secrets hidden. It teaches us that as we grow older and mature, we should be grateful for the blessings bestowed upon us and seek to please Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) through righteous actions. Keeping our secrets concealed is an integral part of being a Muslim.

The consequences of not adhering to the principle of concealing secrets can be detrimental. Disclosing someone's secret can lead to broken trust, damaged relationships, and even harm to individuals involved. It is essential to remember that trust is the foundation of any healthy relationship, and by betraying someone's trust, we risk losing that bond.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), known for his profound knowledge and wisdom, emphasized the importance of guarding secrets. His teachings remind us of the significance of maintaining confidentiality and respecting the privacy of others. By doing so, we not only uphold the values of Islam but also contribute to a harmonious and trustworthy society.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us that the essence of a secret lies in its concealment. This principle aligns with the Quranic teachings of privacy, trust, and respect for others. By keeping secrets hidden, we uphold the values of Islam and contribute to the establishment of a virtuous society. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) guide us to follow the teachings of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) and grant us the wisdom to guard the secrets entrusted to us.
