In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. May peace and blessings be upon the Prophet Muhammad (), his family (Ahl al-Bayt), and his companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "العِفافُ زَهادَةٌ۔" which translates to

Chastity is renunciation [of worldly pleasures].

Let us delve into the connotation of this statement in light of the Quran.

The word (al-'ifaf) "العِفافُ" refers to chastity, purity, and modesty. It encompasses the idea of restraining oneself from indulging in immoral or illicit desires. It is a virtue that requires self-discipline and self-control, particularly in matters related to sexuality. Chastity is not limited to physical actions but also includes maintaining purity in thoughts, intentions, and interactions.

The word (zuhd) "زَهادَةٌ" means renunciation or detachment from worldly pleasures. It signifies a voluntary abandonment of material possessions and desires for the sake of attaining spiritual growth and closeness to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). Zuhd is not about completely rejecting the world but rather prioritizing the eternal over the temporary, seeking contentment in simplicity, and avoiding excessive attachment to worldly possessions.

The Quran emphasizes the importance of chastity and renunciation in various verses. For instance, in Surah Al-Mu'minun (23:5-7), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) describes the qualities of the believers, saying,

And they who guard their private parts, except from their wives or those their right hands possess, for indeed, they will not be blamed - But whoever seeks beyond that, then those are the transgressors - And they who are to their trusts and their promises attentive.

This verse highlights the significance of maintaining chastity by restraining oneself from engaging in illicit sexual relations. It encourages believers to limit their intimate relationships to the bounds of marriage, thereby preserving their purity and protecting themselves from moral transgressions.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Kahf (18:46), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) warns against excessive attachment to worldly possessions, saying,

Wealth and children are [but] adornment of the worldly life. But the enduring good deeds are better to your Lord for reward and better for [one's] hope.

This verse reminds us that material wealth and worldly pleasures are temporary adornments that hold no lasting value. It encourages believers to prioritize their actions and intentions towards deeds that have eternal rewards and bring them closer to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement,

Chastity is renunciation [of worldly pleasures],

When one practices chastity, they are essentially renouncing the fleeting pleasures of this world in favor of the eternal rewards promised by Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).
