If you find from the needy people one who will carry your provision for you up to the Day of Resurrection and return it to you tomorrow when you need it most, then take the opportunity and give it to him, and increase the provisions that you give him [to carry for you] while you are able to, for it is possible that you may [at one time] seek him but not find him.

(Ghurar al-Hikam: Good Turns And Benevolent Actions)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
In this profound Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), he advises us on the importance of recognizing and seizing opportunities to help those in need. Let us delve into the words of this Hadith and explore its deeper meaning in light of the Quran.
The Hadith begins with Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) stating,
If you find from the needy people one who will carry your provision for you up to the Day of Resurrection and return it to you tomorrow when you need it most...
Here, the Imam is emphasizing the significance of finding someone who is not only willing to assist us in our times of need but also someone who will remain faithful and reliable until the Day of Resurrection. This highlights the importance of building strong relationships based on trust and mutual support.
To further understand the essence of this Hadith, let us turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:195),
And spend in the way of Allah and do not throw [yourselves] with your [own] hands into destruction [by refraining]. And do good; indeed, Allah loves the doers of good.
This verse emphasizes the importance of spending in the way of Allah and doing good deeds. It encourages us to seize opportunities to help others and not withhold our provisions when we have the means to assist.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) continues in the Hadith,
then take the opportunity and give it to him, and increase the provisions that you give him [to carry for you] while you are able to...
Here, the Imam advises us to not only take advantage of the opportunity to help someone in need but also to go above and beyond in our assistance. This highlights the concept of generosity and selflessness, which are highly regarded in Islam.
The Quran echoes this sentiment in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:261), where Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,
The example of those who spend their wealth in the way of Allah is like a seed [of grain] which grows seven spikes; in each spike is a hundred grains. And Allah multiplies [His reward] for whom He wills. And Allah is all-Encompassing and Knowing.
This verse emphasizes the immense rewards that await those who are generous and increase their provisions for the sake of Allah.
Lastly, Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) concludes the Hadith by stating,
for it is possible that you may [at one time] seek him but not find him.
This serves as a reminder of the transient nature of life and the uncertainty of future opportunities. It urges us to seize the present moment and make the most of the chances we have to help others.
Reflecting on this Hadith, we are reminded of the importance of recognizing and utilizing opportunities to assist those in need. It encourages us to be proactive in our acts of kindness and to go above and beyond in our generosity. By doing so, we not only fulfill our duty as Muslims but also earn the pleasure of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and the potential for immense rewards in this life and the hereafter.
May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom and strength to follow the teachings of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) and seize every opportunity to help those in need. May He bless us with the ability to be generous and selfless, and may He accept our deeds. Ameen.
