لِلْحازِمِ مِنْ عَقْلِهِ عَنْ كُلِّ دَنِيَّة زاجِرٌ۔
The intellect of the judicious one acts as a deterrent from every demerit.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: The Judicious)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
The intellect of the judicious one acts as a deterrent from every demerit.
This enlightening saying highlights the significance of intellect and its role in guiding individuals away from evil and wrongdoing.
Let us delve into the important words of this Hadith. The word (hazim) "حازِمِ" refers to someone who possesses intellect and wisdom. This person is judicious, discerning, and possesses the ability to make sound judgments. The word (aqlihi) "عَقْلِهِ" refers to the intellect or rationality of an individual. It is through this intellect that one is able to understand and differentiate between right and wrong.
The phrase (an kulli daniyyah zajir)
عَنْ كُلِّ دَنِيَّة زاجِرٌ
translates to
acts as a deterrent from every demerit.
Here, Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes that the intellect of a judicious person serves as a deterrent, preventing them from engaging in any form of wrongdoing or immoral behavior.
To further understand the significance of intellect in guiding individuals towards righteousness, we turn to the Quran. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:197),
And take provisions, but indeed, the best provision is Taqwa (piety). So fear Me, O you of understanding.
This verse highlights that those who possess understanding and intellect are more likely to fear Allah and adhere to His commands.
Additionally, in Surah Al-Anfal (8:22), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,
Indeed, the worst of living creatures in the sight of Allah are the deaf and dumb who do not use reason.
This verse emphasizes the importance of using reason and intellect in order to avoid being among those who are considered the worst of creatures in the sight of Allah.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement serves as a reminder for Muslims to cultivate and utilize their intellect in making decisions and choices in life. The intellect acts as a guiding light, enabling individuals to discern between right and wrong, good and evil. It empowers them to resist temptations and avoid engaging in sinful actions.
By employing their intellect, Muslims can make informed choices that align with the teachings of Islam. They can reflect upon the consequences of their actions and make decisions that are in line with the principles of justice, compassion, and righteousness.
The intellect also plays a crucial role in understanding and interpreting the teachings of the Quran and the Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ). It enables Muslims to delve deeper into the meanings of the verses and apply them in their daily lives. Through the intellect, Muslims can seek knowledge, reflect upon the signs of Allah in the universe, and strive for personal and spiritual growth.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the importance of intellect in guiding individuals away from wrongdoing. It serves as a deterrent, preventing them from engaging in demerits and leading them towards righteousness. Muslims are encouraged to cultivate and utilize their intellect, seeking knowledge and understanding, in order to make informed choices that are pleasing to Allah. May Allah grant us all the ability to use our intellect wisely and to seek His guidance in all aspects of our lives.
