Serving the body is granting it whatever it seeks of pleasures and desires and what it covets, but in [all] this is the destruction of the soul.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: The Body)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. Peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The provided Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the concept of serving the body and the consequences it has on the soul. Let us delve into the exegesis of this profound saying in light of the Quran.
The key words in this Hadith are (serving the body) "خِدْمَةُ الجَسَدِ", (pleasures) "مَلاذِّ", (desires) "شَّهَواتِ", (covets) "مُقْتَنَياتِ", and (destruction of the soul) "هِلاكُ النَّفسِ".
The Quran provides us with guidance on how to approach the desires and pleasures of the body. In Surah Al-Isra (17:32), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,
And do not approach unlawful sexual intercourse. Indeed, it is ever an immorality and is evil as a way.
This verse highlights the importance of controlling our desires and not indulging in unlawful acts that harm our souls.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Hujurat (49:11), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states,
O you who have believed, let not a people ridicule [another] people; perhaps they may be better than them; nor let women ridicule [other] women; perhaps they may be better than them. And do not insult one another and do not call each other by [offensive] nicknames. Wretched is the name of disobedience after [one's] faith. And whoever does not repent - then it is those who are the wrongdoers.
This verse reminds us to refrain from engaging in harmful speech and actions that can lead to the destruction of our souls.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith warns us about the consequences of solely focusing on fulfilling the desires and pleasures of the body. When we prioritize the needs of our physical selves over the needs of our souls, we risk losing sight of our spiritual growth and development. This can lead to a state of heedlessness and spiritual decline.
For example, when we constantly seek material possessions and worldly pleasures without considering the impact on our souls, we become attached to the temporary and transient aspects of life. This attachment can blind us from the true purpose of our existence, which is to worship Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and seek His pleasure.
Moreover, excessive indulgence in physical desires can lead to moral corruption and unethical behavior. When we prioritize our own desires above the rights and well-being of others, we contribute to the deterioration of society and the erosion of moral values. This can have far-reaching consequences not only for individuals but also for communities and nations.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith serves as a reminder for Muslims to strike a balance between the needs of the body and the needs of the soul. While it is important to take care of our physical well-being, we must not neglect our spiritual growth and development. We should strive to align our desires and pleasures with the teachings of Islam and the guidance of the Quran.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the importance of serving the body in moderation, while being mindful of the impact on our souls. By seeking a balance between physical and spiritual needs, we can lead a fulfilling and purposeful life as Muslims. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) guide us in our journey towards self-improvement and grant us the wisdom to prioritize our souls over the temporary pleasures of this world.
