ما حُصِّنَتِ النِّعَمُ بِمِثْلِ الشُّكْرِ۔
Nothing fortifies blessings like gratitude.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Gratitude And The Grateful)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. All praise is due to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
ما حُصِّنَتِ النِّعَمُ بِمِثْلِ الشُّكْرِ۔
This can be translated as,
Nothing fortifies blessings like gratitude.
This thought-provoking Hadith emphasizes the importance of expressing gratitude for the blessings bestowed upon us by Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).
Let us delve into the deeper meaning of this Hadith in light of the Quran. The word (husinat) "حُصِّنَتِ" in the Hadith means to fortify, protect, or safeguard. It implies that gratitude acts as a shield or barrier that preserves and strengthens the blessings we receive from Allah. Gratitude is not merely a fleeting emotion; rather, it is a powerful force that safeguards and enhances the blessings in our lives.
The word (ni'am) "نِّعَمُ" in the Hadith refers to the countless blessings and favors bestowed upon us by Allah. These blessings encompass both the material and spiritual aspects of our lives. They include good health, sustenance, family, knowledge, guidance, and countless other blessings that we often take for granted.
The word (shukr) "شُّكْرِ" in the Hadith means gratitude or thankfulness. Gratitude is the act of acknowledging and appreciating the blessings we receive from Allah. It is an attitude of recognizing the source of our blessings and expressing our heartfelt appreciation to Allah for His infinite mercy and generosity.
The Quran provides numerous verses that emphasize the importance of gratitude and its profound impact on our lives. Allah says in Surah Ibrahim (14:7),
And [remember] when your Lord proclaimed, 'If you are grateful, I will surely increase you [in favor]; but if you deny, indeed, My punishment is severe.'
This verse clearly highlights the direct correlation between gratitude and the increase in blessings from Allah. When we express gratitude, Allah promises to multiply our blessings manifold.
In Surah An-Naml (27:40), Allah says,
Say, 'Travel through the land and observe how He began creation. Then Allah will produce the final creation. Indeed Allah, over all things, is competent.'
This verse encourages us to reflect upon the signs of Allah's creation and observe the blessings He has bestowed upon us. By doing so, we develop a deep sense of gratitude for His infinite wisdom and power.
Gratitude is not limited to expressing thanks for material blessings alone. It also encompasses gratitude for the spiritual blessings and guidance that Allah has bestowed upon us. In Surah Al-Baqarah (2:185), Allah says,
Allah intends for you ease and does not intend for you hardship and [wants] for you to complete the period and to glorify Allah for that [to] which He has guided you; and perhaps you will be grateful.
This verse reminds us to be grateful for the guidance and ease that Allah has provided us with in matters of faith and worship.
When we cultivate an attitude of gratitude, it has a transformative effect on our lives. Gratitude enables us to recognize the blessings that we often overlook or take for granted. It instills in us a sense of contentment and satisfaction with what we have, rather than constantly yearning for more. Gratitude also strengthens our relationship with Allah, as it is an act of worship that acknowledges His benevolence and mercy.
Moreover, gratitude has a positive impact on our mental and emotional well-being. It fosters a sense of optimism, resilience, and inner peace. When we focus on the blessings in our lives and express gratitude for them, it shifts our perspective from negativity to positivity. This, in turn, enhances our overall happiness and satisfaction.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us that gratitude is a powerful tool that fortifies and enhances the blessings we receive from Allah. By expressing gratitude for both the material and spiritual blessings in our lives, we not only increase our blessings but also experience a profound transformation in our outlook and well-being. Let us strive to cultivate an attitude of gratitude and be mindful of the countless blessings bestowed upon us by Allah. May Allah grant us the ability to be truly grateful and may He shower His blessings upon all Muslims.
