Death comes to every living thing.

— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Death)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The provided Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

الموت يأتي على كل حي

which translates to

Death comes to every living thing.

This enlightening saying of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) encapsulates the universal reality that death is an inevitable fate that awaits all living beings.

The word (death) "الموت" is derived from the Arabic root "موت" which means to die or to cease to exist. Death is a natural phenomenon that occurs when the soul departs from the physical body, marking the end of earthly life. It is a transition from the temporary realm of this world to the eternal realm of the hereafter.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement emphasizes the universality of death by stating that it comes to (every living thing) "كل حي". This includes all forms of life, whether human, animal, or plant. Regardless of one's status, wealth, or power, death is an inescapable reality that awaits everyone.

The concept of death and its inevitability is repeatedly mentioned in the Quran to remind Muslims of the transient nature of this world and the importance of preparing for the hereafter. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Ankabut (29:57),

Every soul will taste death. Then to Us will you be returned.

This verse affirms that every soul will experience death, emphasizing the certainty of this event.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Imran (3:185), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states,

Every soul will taste death, and you will only be given your [full] compensation on the Day of Resurrection.

This verse highlights the transient nature of life and the ultimate accountability that awaits us in the hereafter.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement serves as a reminder for Muslims to reflect upon the reality of death and to prioritize their actions accordingly. It urges us to contemplate the purpose of our existence and to strive for righteousness and good deeds, as these are the provisions that will benefit us in the eternal life after death.

The recognition of death's inevitability should motivate Muslims to lead a life of piety, seeking the pleasure of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and preparing for the hereafter. It should serve as a reminder to prioritize the worship of Allah and to fulfill our obligations towards Him and His creation.

Moreover, the awareness of death's certainty should also instill humility and gratitude within Muslims. It reminds us that our time in this world is limited and that we should make the most of it by engaging in acts of kindness, charity, and seeking knowledge. It encourages us to value the blessings bestowed upon us and to utilize them in ways that benefit ourselves and others.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ)

Death comes to every living thing

serves as a powerful reminder for Muslims to reflect upon the transient nature of life and the inevitability of death. It urges us to prioritize our actions and strive for righteousness, seeking the pleasure of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and preparing for the eternal life after death. May Allah (تَبَارَكَ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom and guidance to live a life that is pleasing to Him and beneficial to ourselves and others.
