هَمُّ المُؤمِنِ لآِخِرَتِهِ، وكُلُّ جِدِّهِ لِمُنْقَلَبِهِ۔
The concern of a believer is for his Hereafter, and all his efforts are for his place of [final] return.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: The Believer)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his purified progeny, and his noble companions.
The provided Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the importance of a believer's focus on the Hereafter and the ultimate return to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). Let us delve into the deeper meaning of this beautiful saying and explore its implications in light of the Quran.
The key words in this Hadith are (hammu al-mu'min) "هَمُّ المُؤمِنِ", which can be translated as
the concern of a believer.
The word (hamm) "هَمُّ" refers to a deep and sincere worry or concern, while (al-mu'min) "المُؤمِنِ" signifies a true believer, someone who has faith in Allah and His Messenger.
To understand the significance of the believer's concern for the Hereafter, we turn to the Quran, where Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) repeatedly emphasizes the importance of prioritizing the eternal life over the temporary worldly life. In Surah Al-Kahf, Allah says, (18:46)
But you prefer the worldly life, while the Hereafter is better and more enduring
This verse reminds us that the true value lies in the Hereafter, which is everlasting, as opposed to the fleeting nature of this worldly life.
Furthermore, the Hadith states that
all his efforts are for his place of [final] return.
This implies that a believer should direct all their efforts and actions towards attaining success in the Hereafter. The word (jiddihi) "جِدِّهِ" refers to one's efforts, endeavors, and earnestness. It highlights the importance of sincerity and dedication in striving for the Hereafter.
The Quran provides numerous examples of individuals who dedicated their lives to the pursuit of the Hereafter. Prophet Ibrahim (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) is a prime example of someone who prioritized the Hereafter over worldly matters. In Surah Al-Baqarah, Allah describes Ibrahim's supplication, (2:201)
Our Lord, grant us good in this world and good in the Hereafter and protect us from the punishment of the Fire
This verse illustrates Ibrahim's recognition of the importance of both worlds, but his ultimate concern was for the Hereafter.
The consequences of prioritizing the Hereafter are profound. By focusing on the eternal life, a believer gains a sense of purpose and direction in their actions. They are motivated to engage in righteous deeds, seek knowledge, and strive for moral excellence. This commitment to the Hereafter shapes their character and influences their choices, leading to a life of piety and righteousness.
Moreover, the believer's concern for the Hereafter instills a sense of accountability and responsibility. They are aware that their actions in this world will have consequences in the Hereafter. This awareness guides them to make choices that align with the teachings of Islam and avoid actions that may lead to negative consequences in the Hereafter.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) possessed immense knowledge and wisdom, making his words particularly insightful. His emphasis on the concern for the Hereafter serves as a reminder to Muslims of the importance of prioritizing their eternal destination. It encourages believers to reflect on their actions and intentions, ensuring that they are in line with the teachings of Islam and aimed at attaining success in the Hereafter.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the significance of a believer's concern for the Hereafter and the need to direct all efforts towards attaining success in the eternal life. By focusing on the Hereafter, Muslims gain a sense of purpose, motivation, and accountability in their actions. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the ability to prioritize the Hereafter and guide us towards righteousness in all aspects of our lives.
