اَلجَنَّةُ جَزاءُ المُطيعِ۔
Paradise is the reward of the obedient.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Paradise And The People Of Paradise)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. Peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, the Ahl al-Bayt, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "الجنة جزاء المطيع" which translates to
Paradise is the reward of the obedient.
This concise statement holds essence and serves as a reminder for all Muslims to strive for obedience to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) in order to attain the ultimate reward of Paradise.
To understand the significance of this Hadith, let us delve into the key words and their meanings. (Paradise) "الجنة" refers to the eternal abode of bliss and tranquility that Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) has promised to the righteous believers. It is a place of immense beauty, where the inhabitants will experience unimaginable joy and fulfillment.
The word (reward) "جزاء" signifies the recompense or compensation that is given to someone in return for their actions. In this context, it refers to the ultimate reward that Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grants to those who are obedient to His commands and follow the path of righteousness.
The term (the obedient) "المطيع" refers to those individuals who submit themselves wholeheartedly to the will of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and strive to fulfill His commands and prohibitions. They are the ones who adhere to the teachings of Islam and live their lives in accordance with the guidance of the Quran and the Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ).
The Quran provides numerous verses that emphasize the importance of obedience to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and the reward that awaits the obedient believers. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Imran (3:185):
Every soul will taste death, and you will only be given your [full] compensation on the Day of Resurrection. So he who is drawn away from the Fire and admitted to Paradise has attained [his desire]. And what is the life of this world except the enjoyment of delusion.
This verse highlights the transient nature of this worldly life and emphasizes that the true reward and compensation for our deeds will be granted on the Day of Resurrection. Those who are obedient to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and are saved from the torment of Hellfire will be admitted into Paradise, where they will find eternal bliss and fulfillment.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-A'raf (7:56), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states:
And cause not corruption upon the earth after its reformation. And invoke Him in fear and aspiration. Indeed, the mercy of Allah is near to the doers of good.
This verse emphasizes the importance of obedience to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) by refraining from spreading corruption and invoking Him with fear and hope. It highlights that the mercy of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) is near to those who do good deeds and strive to please Him.
Reflecting on the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), we understand that Paradise is not merely a reward for the obedient, but it is the ultimate culmination of a life dedicated to the obedience of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). It serves as a motivation for Muslims to strive for righteousness, to fulfill their obligations, and to avoid sins and disobedience.
The consequences of obedience are not limited to the reward of Paradise alone. Obedience to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) brings about a sense of inner peace, contentment, and spiritual fulfillment in this world as well. It strengthens our relationship with our Creator and allows us to lead a life of purpose and righteousness.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) reminds us that Paradise is the ultimate reward for those who are obedient to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). It serves as a motivation for Muslims to strive for righteousness, to fulfill their obligations, and to avoid sins and disobedience. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the ability to be among the obedient and bless us with the eternal bliss of Paradise.
