Hadith #1790

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. Peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, the Ahl al-Bayt, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

جُدْ بِما تَجِدْ تُحْمَدْ۔

This can be translated as,

Be generous with whatever you have, [and] you will be praised.

Let us delve into the deeper meanings of this impactful Hadith in light of the Quran.

The first word we will explore is (judd) "جُدْ", which means to be generous or to give abundantly. It signifies going beyond the minimum requirement and giving more than what is expected. This word emphasizes the act of giving with an open heart and a spirit of selflessness. It encourages Muslims to be generous in all aspects of their lives, including their wealth, time, knowledge, and compassion.

The next word is (tajid) "تَجِدْ", which means whatever you have or whatever you find. This word highlights the importance of utilizing the resources and blessings that Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) has bestowed upon us. It reminds us that we should not underestimate the value of what we possess, whether it is material wealth, skills, or opportunities. We should recognize that even the smallest contribution can make a significant impact when given with sincerity.

The final part of the Hadith states, (tuhmad) "تُحْمَدْ", which means you will be praised. This phrase signifies the positive consequences and rewards that come with generosity. When we give generously, we not only benefit others but also earn the praise and appreciation of those around us. Moreover, this praise can extend beyond the worldly realm and include the ultimate praise from Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).

To understand the significance of this Hadith, let us turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Baqarah, verse 261:

The example of those who spend their wealth in the way of Allah is like a seed [of grain] which grows seven spikes; in each spike is a hundred grains. And Allah multiplies [His reward] for whom He wills. And Allah is all-Encompassing and Knowing.

This verse emphasizes the concept of generosity and highlights the abundant rewards that come with it. Just as a single seed can yield a bountiful harvest, our acts of generosity can have far-reaching effects and bring blessings into our lives.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Baqarah, verse 274, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states:

Those who spend their wealth [in Allah's cause] by night and by day, secretly and publicly - they will have their reward with their Lord. And no fear will there be concerning them, nor will they grieve.

This verse assures us that those who give generously, without seeking recognition or reward from others, will be rewarded by Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) Himself. It reminds us that our acts of generosity should be driven by a sincere desire to please Allah and help those in need, rather than seeking praise or validation from others.

Reflecting on the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) and the supporting Quranic verses, we understand that generosity is not limited to material possessions. It encompasses all aspects of our lives, including our time, knowledge, and compassion. When we give generously, we not only benefit others but also earn the praise and rewards of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). Our acts of generosity have the potential to bring about positive change in the world and leave a lasting impact on the lives of those around us.

As Muslims, let us strive to embody the spirit of generosity in all that we do. Let us be mindful of the blessings we have been given and utilize them to benefit others. By following the teachings of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) and the guidance of the Quran, we can cultivate a culture of generosity and compassion within ourselves and our communities. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) bless us with the ability to be generous and may our acts of generosity be a means of earning His pleasure and praise.
