اَللَّئِيمُ إذا بَلَغَ فَوْقَ مِقْدارِهِ تَنَكَّرَتْ أحْوالُهُ۔
When the vile one attains a position above his status, his condition changes [for the worse].
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: The Vile)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. Peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The provided Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
When the vile one attains a position above his status, his condition changes [for the worse].
This Hadith highlights the consequences of individuals who are unworthy or lacking in moral character attaining positions of power or authority.
Let us delve deeper into the key words of this Hadith to gain a better understanding. The word "vile" is translated from the Arabic term (al-layyim) "اللئيم", which refers to someone who is morally corrupt, base, or of low character. The word "position" is translated from the Arabic term (miqdar) "مقدار", which signifies a status or rank. Lastly, the word "condition" is translated from the Arabic term (ahwal) "أحوال", which encompasses one's state, circumstances, or situation.
To further comprehend the meaning of this Hadith, let us turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states in Surah Al-Qasas, verse 5:
And We wanted to confer favor upon those who were oppressed in the land and make them leaders and make them inheritors.
This verse emphasizes that Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grants leadership and authority to those who are deserving and righteous. Therefore, it is clear that the vile and morally corrupt individuals mentioned in the Hadith are not worthy of attaining positions of power.
When such unworthy individuals are given positions of authority, their true nature is revealed, and their condition deteriorates. They abuse their power, exploit others, and act in ways that are contrary to justice and righteousness. This is a natural consequence of their lack of moral character and integrity. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) warns us in Surah Al-Munafiqun, verse 4:
When you see them, their forms please you, and if they speak, you listen to their speech. [They are] as if they were pieces of wood propped up - they think that every shout is against them. They are the enemy, so beware of them. May Allah destroy them; how are they deluded?
The consequences of allowing unworthy individuals to hold positions of power are detrimental not only to the individuals themselves but also to society as a whole. Their actions and decisions can lead to corruption, injustice, and the oppression of the weak. This Hadith serves as a reminder for Muslims to be cautious and discerning when selecting leaders and to prioritize moral character and righteousness over worldly achievements.
Reflecting on this Hadith, we can draw parallels to our present-day society. We witness individuals who lack integrity and moral values attaining positions of power, whether in politics, business, or other spheres of influence. Their actions often result in negative consequences for society, as they prioritize personal gain over the well-being of others. As Muslims, it is our duty to strive for justice and righteousness and to advocate for leaders who possess these qualities.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a reminder of the importance of selecting leaders based on their moral character and integrity. When unworthy individuals attain positions above their status, their true nature is revealed, and their condition deteriorates. We must strive to uphold justice and righteousness in all aspects of our lives and work towards creating a society where leaders are chosen for their moral virtues rather than their worldly achievements. May Allah guide us all on the path of righteousness and protect us from the harm caused by unworthy leaders.
