كَفى بِالمَرْءِ شُغْلاً (شُغْلُهُ) بِمَعائِبِه ِ عَنْ مَعائِبِ النّاسِ۔
A person’s own faults are enough to keep him occupied from the faults of other people.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Flaws And Faults)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure Ahl al-Bayt (عَلَيْهِمُ ٱلسَّلَامُ), and his righteous companions.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) presents a profound insight into human behavior and self-awareness. The key words in this Hadith are (shughlan) "شُغْلاً" meaning occupation or engagement, (ma'aayibihi) "مَعائِبِه" meaning his own faults, and (ma'aayib al-naas) "مَعائِبِ النّاسِ" meaning the faults of other people. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), known for his unparalleled wisdom and deep understanding of human nature, emphasizes the importance of self-reflection and self-improvement.
The Quran provides guidance on this matter, urging Muslims to focus on their own shortcomings before criticizing others. In Surah Al-Hujurat, verse 12, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says:
O you who have believed, avoid much [negative] assumption. Indeed, some assumption is sin. And do not spy or backbite each other. Would one of you like to eat the flesh of his brother when dead? You would detest it. And fear Allah; indeed, Allah is Accepting of repentance and Merciful.
This verse highlights the sinfulness of backbiting and the importance of introspection.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Baqarah, verse 44, Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) questions:
Do you order righteousness of the people and forget yourselves while you recite the Scripture? Then will you not reason?
This verse serves as a reminder that one must first rectify their own actions and character before advising others.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us that the journey of self-improvement is a lifelong endeavor. By focusing on our own faults, we engage in a process of self-purification, which is crucial for spiritual growth. This Hadith encourages Muslims to practice humility and self-awareness, recognizing that every individual has imperfections that require attention and correction.
The motivation behind this teaching is to foster a community where individuals are more concerned with their own moral and spiritual development rather than being preoccupied with the shortcomings of others. This approach not only leads to personal growth but also cultivates a more compassionate and understanding society. When individuals focus on their own faults, they are less likely to engage in gossip, slander, or judgment, which are detrimental to communal harmony.
The consequences of ignoring this advice can lead to a society rife with judgment and negativity, where individuals are quick to point out others' faults while neglecting their own. This behavior can create divisions and animosity within the community, contrary to the teachings of Islam which promote unity and brotherhood.
Reflecting on this Hadith, Muslims are encouraged to engage in regular self-assessment, seeking forgiveness for their shortcomings and striving to improve. By doing so, they not only enhance their own character but also contribute to a more harmonious and supportive community. Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) wisdom serves as a timeless reminder of the importance of self-awareness and the pursuit of personal excellence in the path of Allah (تَبَارَكَ وَتَعَالَىٰ).
