(Ghurar al-Hikam: Opinions And The Opinonated)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The provided Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) cautions against becoming opinionated and headstrong, as it leads to destruction. Let us delve into the deeper meaning of this enlightening Hadith and explore its significance in light of the Quran.

The word (tastabidda) "تَسْتَبِدَّ" in the Hadith refers to becoming opinionated, stubborn, or inflexible in one's views. It implies an excessive attachment to one's own opinions, disregarding the possibility of being wrong or considering alternative perspectives. This rigidity can hinder growth, hinder the ability to learn from others, and lead to one's downfall.

To understand the gravity of this warning, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. In Surah Al-Kahf (18:54), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) advises us,

And We have certainly diversified in this Qur'an for the people from every [kind of] example, but most of the people refused [anything] except disbelief.

This verse highlights the importance of being open-minded and receptive to different perspectives and teachings. By refusing to consider alternative viewpoints, one risks falling into disbelief and ignorance.

Another verse that sheds light on the consequences of being opinionated is found in Surah Al-A'raf (7:175), where Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) describes those who are stubborn and arrogant, saying,

And recite to them the news of him to whom We gave [knowledge of] Our signs, but he detached himself from them; so Satan pursued him, and he became of the deviators.

This verse warns us of the dangers of detaching ourselves from knowledge and guidance, as it allows Satan to lead us astray.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith serves as a reminder to Muslims to remain humble and open-minded in their pursuit of knowledge and understanding. It encourages us to seek wisdom from various sources and to be willing to reconsider our opinions when presented with new information. By doing so, we can avoid the pitfalls of arrogance, ignorance, and deviation.

Furthermore, this Hadith emphasizes the importance of seeking guidance from the Quran and the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad () and the Ahl al-Bayt (عَلَيْهِمُ ٱلسَّلَامُ). The Quran is a comprehensive guide that provides us with the principles and values necessary to navigate through life. It teaches us to be humble, to seek knowledge, and to be open to different perspectives.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a profound reminder for Muslims to avoid becoming opinionated and headstrong. It urges us to remain open-minded, receptive to knowledge, and willing to reconsider our opinions when necessary. By doing so, we can protect ourselves from the destructive consequences of arrogance and ignorance. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) guide us all on the path of humility and wisdom.
