إنَّ لِلْباقِينَ بِالماضينَ مُعْتَبَراً۔
Verily for those who remain [behind] there is an example in those who have passed.

(Ghurar al-Hikam: Taking Lessons And Examples)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
إنَّ لِلْباقِينَ بِالماضينَ مُعْتَبَراً۔
This Hadith can be translated as,
Verily for those who remain [behind] there is an example in those who have passed.
Let us delve into the deeper meaning of this thought-provoking Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) and explore its implications in light of the Quran.
The word (baqeen) "باقِينَ" refers to those who remain or survive, while (madien) "ماضينَ" refers to those who have passed or gone before. This Hadith highlights the importance of reflecting upon the experiences and lessons of those who have come before us. It urges us to learn from their examples, both positive and negative, in order to navigate our own lives and make informed decisions.
In the Quran, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) repeatedly emphasizes the significance of learning from the past. In Surah Al-Hashr (59:2), Allah says,
He is Allah, other than whom there is no deity, Knower of the unseen and the witnessed. He is the Most Merciful, the Most Compassionate.
This verse reminds us that Allah is the All-Knowing, and His knowledge encompasses both the seen and the unseen. Therefore, it is essential for us to seek guidance from the past, as it is part of the witnessed knowledge that Allah has bestowed upon us.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Anfal (8:43), Allah states,
And Allah knows the unseen [aspects] of the heavens and the earth. And Allah is Seeing of what you do.
This verse highlights the comprehensive knowledge of Allah, who is aware of all that is hidden from us. By reflecting on the experiences of those who have passed, we can gain valuable insights and avoid repeating their mistakes.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith encourages us to study the lives of the Prophets, the righteous companions, and the pious individuals who came before us. By doing so, we can draw inspiration from their virtues, emulate their noble qualities, and learn from their struggles and triumphs. For instance, we can learn patience and perseverance from the Prophet Job (Ayub), who remained steadfast in the face of immense hardships. We can learn humility and devotion from the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), who exemplified the highest moral character and unwavering faith.
Moreover, reflecting on the lives of those who have passed can also serve as a reminder of the consequences of their actions. In Surah Al-Anfal (8:54), Allah says,
Like the custom of the people of Pharaoh and those before them. They denied the signs of their Lord, so We destroyed them for their sins, and We drowned the people of Pharaoh. And all [of them] were wrongdoers.
This verse warns us of the fate that befell those who rejected the signs of Allah and persisted in their wrongdoing. By studying their stories, we can learn from their mistakes and avoid similar pitfalls in our own lives.
In conclusion, Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith reminds us of the importance of reflecting on the experiences and examples of those who have passed. By studying the lives of the Prophets, the righteous companions, and the pious individuals, we can gain valuable insights, draw inspiration, and learn from their successes and failures. This reflection enables us to make informed decisions, avoid repeating past mistakes, and strive towards righteousness. May Allah guide us to follow the path of those who have passed and grant us the wisdom to learn from their examples.
