Verily tribulations have certain extents that have to be passed so remain in slumber until they pass, for indeed trying to find a solution before this only increases [and prolongs] it.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Tribulations)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
In this profound hadith, Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) enlightens us about the nature of tribulations and the importance of patience in dealing with them. Let us delve into the words of this hadith and explore its deeper meanings.
The Arabic word (mihan) "مِحَنِ" refers to trials or tribulations that we encounter in our lives. These trials can take various forms, such as personal hardships, societal challenges, or even spiritual tests. The word (ghayat) "غايات" means limits or extents, indicating that tribulations have a predetermined duration or endpoint. It is crucial to understand that every trial has a specific purpose and a time frame that must be endured.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) advises us to "remain in slumber" until the tribulations pass. This metaphorical slumber signifies patience and endurance. It implies that we should not rush to find immediate solutions or try to escape the difficulties prematurely. Instead, we should embrace patience and trust in Allah's wisdom, knowing that every trial has a purpose and will eventually come to an end.
To support this profound advice, we find numerous Quranic verses that emphasize the importance of patience during trials. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:155),
And We will surely test you with something of fear and hunger and a loss of wealth and lives and fruits, but give good tidings to the patient.
This verse reminds us that trials are an inevitable part of life, and it is through patience that we can find solace and reward from Allah.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-'Ankabut (29:2), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,
Do the people think that they will be left to say, 'We believe' and they will not be tried?
This verse highlights the fact that trials are a means of testing our faith and strengthening our character. It reminds us that tribulations are not meant to break us but to refine us and bring us closer to Allah.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) further warns against trying to find a solution before the tribulation has run its course. He states that such attempts only serve to increase and prolong the trial. This profound insight teaches us that rushing to find immediate solutions may not be beneficial in the long run. Instead, it is wiser to patiently endure the trial until its natural conclusion, as this allows us to learn valuable lessons and grow spiritually.
To illustrate this point, let us consider the example of Prophet Yusuf (Joseph) (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ). When he was thrown into the well by his brothers and later faced imprisonment, he did not despair or seek immediate escape. Instead, he patiently endured these tribulations, trusting in Allah's plan. As a result, he emerged from these trials with honor and became a beloved ruler in Egypt.
In conclusion, this hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us the importance of patience and endurance during tribulations. It reminds us that every trial has a predetermined duration and purpose, and rushing to find immediate solutions may only prolong the difficulty. By embracing patience and trusting in Allah's wisdom, we can navigate through trials with resilience and emerge stronger in faith. May Allah grant us the strength to remain steadfast during tribulations and grant us the wisdom to learn from them.
