Hadith #7611

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

آفَةُ العُمْرانِ جَوْرُ السُّلْطانِ۔

This can be translated as,

The bane of development and prosperity is the oppression of a tyrant.

Let us delve into the significance of this statement in light of the Quran.

Firstly, let us analyze the key words in this Hadith. (bane) "آفَةُ" refers to something that causes harm, destruction, or ruin. (development and prosperity) "العُمْرانِ" encompasses the growth and progress of a society in various aspects, such as economic, social, and spiritual. To understand the enlightening message of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:188),

And do not consume one another's wealth unjustly or send it [in bribery] to the rulers in order that [they might aid] you [to] consume a portion of the wealth of the people in sin, while you know [it is unlawful].

This verse highlights the prohibition of unjustly taking the wealth of others and bribing rulers for personal gain, which can lead to the oppression of the people and hinder societal development.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Qasas (28:4), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) warns against the oppressive behavior of rulers, saying,

Indeed, Pharaoh exalted himself in the land and made its people into factions, oppressing a sector among them, slaughtering their [newborn] sons and keeping their females alive. Indeed, he was of the corrupters.
