Hadith #3743

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his purified progeny, and his noble companions.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

The sweetness of this world leads to the bitterness of the Hereafter and an unpleasant ending.

The word (halawat) "حَلاوَةُ" refers to the sweetness or pleasure derived from something. On the other hand, the word (mararah) "مَرارَةَ" signifies bitterness or unpleasantness. This bitterness is experienced in the Hereafter, where the true consequences of one's actions are realized.

The phrase (al-akhirah) "الآخِرَةِ" refers to the Hereafter, the eternal life that awaits every individual after death. The Hadith emphasizes that the pursuit of worldly pleasures, without considering the consequences in the Hereafter, leads to an unpleasant ending.

The Quran provides numerous verses that support the message conveyed in this Hadith. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) warns us about the fleeting nature of worldly pleasures and the importance of prioritizing the Hereafter. In Surah Al-Imran (3:185), Allah says,

Every soul will taste death, and you will only be given your [full] compensation on the Day of Resurrection. So he who is drawn away from the Fire and admitted to Paradise has attained [his desire]. And what is the life of this world except the enjoyment of delusion.

This verse reminds us that the true reward and compensation for our actions will be given in the Hereafter. And present to them the example of the life of this world, [its being] like rain which We send down from the sky, and the vegetation of the earth mingles with it and [then] it becomes dry remnants, scattered by the winds. And Allah is ever, over all things, Perfect in Ability.

This verse beautifully illustrates the temporary nature of worldly pleasures. Just as rain nourishes the earth and brings forth vegetation, the pleasures of this world may seem fulfilling and satisfying.
