Hadith #2290

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure Ahl al-Bayt (عَلَيْهِمُ السَّلَامُ), and his noble companions.

The provided Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the importance of generosity and kindness towards others. Let us delve into the exegesis of this profound saying in light of the Quran.

The first part of the Hadith states,

Start by giving the one who has not asked you.

Here, Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) encourages Muslims to proactively give to those in need, even before they ask for assistance. This act of selflessness and generosity is in line with the teachings of the Quran. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:261),

The example of those who spend their wealth in the way of Allah is like a seed [of grain] which grows seven spikes; in each spike is a hundred grains. And Allah multiplies [His reward] for whom He wills. And Allah is all-Encompassing and Knowing.

By initiating acts of charity without being prompted, we not only fulfill the rights of those in need but also attain the pleasure of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). This selfless act of giving not only benefits the recipient but also purifies the heart of the giver, fostering a sense of empathy and compassion.

The second part of the Hadith states,

Extend your favor to the one who has sought it.

This highlights the importance of responding to the requests for help and support from those who approach us. It is our duty as Muslims to assist those who seek our aid, whether it be financial, emotional, or any other form of support. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) reminds us in Surah Al-Isra (17:80),

And say: My Lord! Cause me to come in with a firm incoming and to go out with a firm outgoing. And give me from Thy presence a sustaining Power.

When we respond to the calls for help, we not only fulfill our obligations as Muslims but also contribute to the well-being and upliftment of society. It is through these acts of kindness and support that we can make a positive impact on the lives of others, spreading love and compassion in the world.

The final part of the Hadith states,

Be cautious never to turn away a beggar.

This admonition from Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) reminds us of the importance of not rejecting or dismissing those who come to us seeking assistance. In Surah Adh-Dhariyat (51:19), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) warns against turning away from those in need, saying,

And in their wealth is a recognized right for the beggar and the deprived.

By refusing to turn away a beggar, we demonstrate our commitment to fulfilling the rights of others and upholding justice. It is our responsibility to ensure that the less fortunate members of society are not neglected or marginalized. By extending a helping hand to those in need, we contribute to the establishment of a just and compassionate society.
