Hadith #2986

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

أعْظَمُ الْحَماقَةِ اَلاِخْتِيالُ فِي الفاقَةِ

which translates to

The greatest foolishness is being conceited in [the state of] poverty.

This wise utterance of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the importance of humility and contentment, especially in times of financial hardship.

To understand the deeper meaning of this Hadith, let us analyze the key words and their implications. The word (a'zamu) "أعْظَمُ" denotes the superlative form of "great" or "greatest." It emphasizes the magnitude of the foolishness being discussed. (al-hamaqah) "الْحَماقَةِ" refers to foolishness or stupidity, indicating a lack of wisdom or understanding. (al-ikhtiyal) "اَلاِخْتِيالُ" means to be conceited or arrogant, while (fi al-faqa) "فِي الفاقَةِ" refers to poverty or destitution.

In the Quran, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) repeatedly emphasizes the importance of humility and contentment. In Surah Al-Hadid (57:23), Allah says,

So that you may not despair over what has eluded you nor exult [in pride] over what He has given you.

This verse reminds us not to be conceited or arrogant when we are blessed with wealth, nor to despair when we face poverty or financial difficulties.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Isra (17:37), Allah advises,

And do not walk upon the earth exultantly. Indeed, you will never tear the earth [apart], and you will never reach the mountains in height.

This verse serves as a reminder that no matter how wealthy or powerful we may become, we should never let pride consume us. We are mere creations of Allah, and our true worth lies in our humility and submission to Him.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith warns us against the foolishness of being conceited in poverty. It is natural for human beings to experience financial hardships at various points in their lives. However, it is during these times that one's true character is tested. Instead of becoming arrogant or bitter, a Muslim should embrace poverty with humility and gratitude.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) was known for his deep understanding and wisdom. And of them is he who says, 'Grant me wealth or children and he will be given abundance in worldly life.' But it is in the Hereafter that he will have no share.

This verse reminds us that material possessions are not the ultimate measure of success. True prosperity lies in the richness of one's faith and character.

Conceit in poverty is a form of foolishness because it blinds us to the blessings and opportunities that lie within our circumstances. It prevents us from seeking solutions, improving our situation, and helping others who may be in need. Instead of being consumed by self-pity or arrogance, a Muslim should turn to Allah in prayer, seek His guidance, and strive to make the best of their situation.

In conclusion, Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith serves as a reminder for Muslims to remain humble and content in times of poverty. It highlights the foolishness of being conceited or arrogant when faced with financial difficulties.
