(Ghurar al-Hikam: Admission And Confession Of One’s Sins)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure and noble Ahl al-Bayt, and his righteous companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "اَلاِعْتِرافُ شَفيعُ الجاني۔" This can be translated as,

Confession is the intercessor of the wrongdoer.

Let us delve into the essence of this Hadith in light of the teachings of the Quran.

The word (al-i'tiraf) "اَلاِعْتِرافُ" refers to confession, acknowledging and admitting one's mistakes or sins. It is an act of humbling oneself before Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and seeking His forgiveness. Confession is not only a means of seeking forgiveness but also a way to purify the soul and rectify one's actions.

The term (shafi'u) "شَفيعُ" means intercessor, someone who mediates or pleads on behalf of another. In this context, confession is described as the intercessor for the wrongdoer. It implies that when a person sincerely confesses their sins, it serves as a means of intercession, seeking forgiveness and mercy from Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).

The word (al-jani) "الجاني" refers to the wrongdoer or the sinner. It encompasses all types of sins and transgressions, whether they are major or minor. The Hadith emphasizes that confession is a powerful tool for the wrongdoer to seek redemption and forgiveness from Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).

The concept of confession as an intercessor finds support in the teachings of the Quran. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) encourages believers to confess their sins and seek His forgiveness. In Surah Al-A'raf (7:23), Allah says,

They said, 'Our Lord, we have wronged ourselves, and if You do not forgive us and have mercy upon us, we will surely be among the losers.'

This verse highlights the importance of acknowledging one's mistakes and seeking forgiveness from Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Ghafir (40:55), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,

So be patient, indeed, the promise of Allah is truth. And whether We show you some of what We have promised them or We take you in death, it is to Us they will be returned.

This verse reminds us that we will all be held accountable for our actions and that it is essential to confess our sins and seek forgiveness before it is too late.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the significance of confession as a means of seeking forgiveness and redemption. When a person sincerely acknowledges their wrongdoings and seeks Allah's forgiveness, it opens the doors of mercy and intercession. Confession is not only a way to seek forgiveness but also a catalyst for personal growth and spiritual purification.

By confessing our sins, we demonstrate humility and a genuine desire to rectify our actions. It serves as a motivation to refrain from repeating those sins and to strive towards righteousness. Confession allows us to reflect on our mistakes, learn from them, and make a conscious effort to improve ourselves.

Moreover, confession leads to a sense of accountability and responsibility. When we openly admit our wrongdoings, we take ownership of our actions and recognize the consequences they may have on ourselves and others. This awareness can motivate us to make amends, seek forgiveness from those we have wronged, and strive to become better individuals.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the importance of confession as the intercessor of the wrongdoer. It encourages Muslims to humbly acknowledge their sins, seek forgiveness from Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ), and strive for personal growth and spiritual purification. Confession serves as a powerful tool for seeking redemption, reflecting on our actions, and taking responsibility for our mistakes. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) guide us all to sincerely confess our sins and seek His forgiveness.
