Hadith #3463

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. Peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, the Ahl al-Bayt, and his noble companions.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

When treacheries (or offenses) become manifest, blessings are taken away.

This Hadith highlights the relationship between treacheries and the withdrawal of blessings. To understand the deeper meaning of this Hadith, let us examine the key words and concepts within it.

The word (zaharat) "ظَهَرَتِ" in the Hadith means "to become manifest" or "to become apparent." It refers to the open display or exposure of treacheries or offenses. This implies that these treacheries are no longer hidden or concealed, but have become evident to all.

The term (al-khiyanat) "الخِياناتُ" refers to treacheries or offenses. It encompasses acts of betrayal, deceit, and dishonesty. These treacheries can manifest in various forms, such as breaking trust, spreading falsehoods, or engaging in corrupt practices.

The phrase (irtafa'at al-barakat) "ارْتَفَعَتِ البَرَكاتُ" translates to

blessings are taken away.

The word (irtafa'at) "ارْتَفَعَتِ" means "to be lifted" or "to be removed." It signifies the withdrawal or deprivation of blessings. These blessings can include divine favor, prosperity, and spiritual well-being.

To understand the meaning of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states in Surah Al-Anfal (8:28),

And know that your properties and your children are but a trial and that Allah has with Him a great reward.

This verse reminds us that worldly possessions and relationships are tests from Allah, and they can be a means of both blessings and trials.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:155), Allah says,

And We will surely test you with something of fear and hunger and a loss of wealth and lives and fruits, but give good tidings to the patient.

This verse emphasizes that trials and tribulations are a part of life, and they serve as tests for our patience and faith.

When treacheries become manifest, it disrupts the harmony and integrity of a society. It creates an atmosphere of mistrust, fear, and instability. As a consequence, the blessings bestowed by Allah are taken away. These blessings can include peace, unity, justice, and prosperity. When treacheries are prevalent, the society loses the divine favor and protection that comes with these blessings.

For example, if a community is plagued by corruption, where public officials engage in embezzlement and bribery, the trust of the people is shattered. The social fabric weakens, and the blessings of prosperity and justice are withdrawn. The economy suffers, and the well-being of the people deteriorates. This is a consequence of treacheries becoming manifest.

Similarly, when individuals engage in acts of betrayal or deceit within their personal relationships, the blessings of love, trust, and harmony are taken away. The bond between family members, friends, and colleagues weakens, leading to emotional distress and fractured relationships.

Reflecting on this Hadith, we are reminded of the importance of upholding honesty, integrity, and trustworthiness in all aspects of our lives. It is a call to reject treacheries and offenses, and to strive for righteousness and moral conduct. By doing so, we can preserve the blessings bestowed upon us by Allah and contribute to the well-being and prosperity of our communities.
