Hadith #1727

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

عِنْدَ كَثْرَةِ الإفْضالِ وشِدَّةِ الإحْتِمالِ تَتَحَقَّقُ الجَلالةُ۔

This Hadith emphasizes the attainment of "loftiness" or "glory" when acts of kindness increase and forbearance becomes strong.

Let us delve into the meaning of some key words in this Hadith. (ifdāl) "إفضال" refers to acts of kindness, generosity, and benevolence. It encompasses going above and beyond in extending favors and benefits to others. (ihtimāl) "إحتمال" refers to forbearance, patience, and endurance in the face of difficulties, hardships, and the shortcomings of others. It is the ability to remain calm and composed, showing restraint and forgiveness.

To understand the enlightening message of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Baqarah, verse 177,

It is not righteousness that you turn your faces toward the east or the west, but [true] righteousness is [in] one who believes in Allah, the Last Day, the angels, the Book, and the prophets and gives wealth, in spite of love for it, to relatives, orphans, the needy, the traveler, those who ask [for help], and for freeing slaves; [and who] establishes prayer and gives zakah; [those who] fulfill their promise when they promise; and [those who] are patient in poverty and hardship and during battle. Those are the ones who have been true, and it is those who are the righteous.

This verse highlights the importance of acts of kindness (إفضال) and forbearance (إحتمال) as integral components of righteousness. True righteousness is not merely confined to rituals or outward displays of piety, but it encompasses a holistic approach to faith that includes fulfilling the rights of others and enduring hardships with patience.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Qasas, verse 54, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,

And when those who believe in Our verses come to you, say, 'Peace be upon you. Your Lord has decreed upon Himself mercy: that any of you who does wrong out of ignorance and then repents after that and corrects himself - indeed, He is Forgiving and Merciful.'

This verse highlights the mercy and forgiveness of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). It teaches us that when we increase acts of kindness and show forbearance, we are emulating the attributes of Allah Himself. By extending kindness and forgiveness to others, we become recipients of Allah's mercy and forgiveness.

Now, let us reflect on the deeper meaning of this Hadith. When acts of kindness increase, it creates an environment of compassion, love, and unity among Muslims. It fosters a sense of brotherhood and sisterhood, where individuals strive to benefit and uplift one another. This not only strengthens the bonds of the community but also brings about a sense of peace and tranquility.

The attainment of "loftiness" or "glory" mentioned in the Hadith refers to the elevation of the individual's character and spiritual status. When acts of kindness and forbearance become ingrained in one's nature, it reflects a deep-rooted understanding of the teachings of Islam. It demonstrates a level of maturity and wisdom that is guided by the principles of justice, compassion, and mercy.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), known for his unparalleled knowledge and wisdom, exemplified these qualities throughout his life.
