(Ghurar al-Hikam: The Body)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. Peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, the Ahl al-Bayt, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

صِحَّةُ الأجْسامِ مِنْ أهْنَاِ الأقسامِ۔

This can be translated as,

Physical health is one of the most wholesome bounties.

Let us delve into the connotation of this Hadith in light of the Quran.

The word (sihah) "صِحَّةُ" refers to physical health, well-being, and soundness of the body. It encompasses the absence of illness, strength, and vitality. It is a state of balance and harmony within the body, where all its systems function optimally. The word (ajsam) "أجْسامِ" refers to bodies or physical beings. It emphasizes the importance of maintaining good health in our physical existence.

The Hadith highlights the significance of physical health as one of the most wholesome bounties bestowed upon us by Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). It reminds us that our bodies are a trust from Allah, and it is our responsibility to take care of them. Neglecting our physical health can lead to various ailments and hinder our ability to fulfill our duties as Muslims.

The Quran provides guidance on the importance of maintaining good health. In Surah Al-Baqarah, Allah says, (Quran 7:31)

And eat and drink, but be not excessive. Indeed, He likes not those who commit excess.

This verse emphasizes moderation in our consumption, which is essential for maintaining physical well-being. Excessive indulgence in food and drink can lead to obesity, heart diseases, and other health issues.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Mu'minun, Allah states, (Quran 95:4)

And We have certainly created man in the best of stature.

This verse highlights the perfection with which Allah has created the human body. It serves as a reminder that we should strive to maintain and preserve this divine gift by taking care of our physical health.

Taking care of our physical health has numerous benefits, both on an individual and societal level. When we are physically healthy, we are more productive, energetic, and able to fulfill our responsibilities towards ourselves, our families, and society. It enables us to actively engage in acts of worship, seek knowledge, and contribute positively to the world around us.

Moreover, physical health is closely linked to mental and spiritual well-being. When our bodies are in good health, our minds are clearer, and our hearts are more receptive to spiritual growth. It allows us to better focus on our prayers, reflect upon the Quran, and strengthen our connection with Allah.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the importance of physical health to remind Muslims of the blessings bestowed upon them and the responsibility they have to maintain and preserve this gift. By taking care of our bodies, we can lead a balanced and fulfilling life, enabling us to fulfill our duties as Muslims and serve Allah and His creation.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the significance of physical health as one of the most wholesome bounties. It reminds us of the importance of taking care of our bodies, which are entrusted to us by Allah. By maintaining good physical health, we can fulfill our duties as Muslims, contribute positively to society, and strengthen our connection with Allah. May Allah grant us the wisdom and motivation to prioritize our physical well-being and use it to serve Him and His creation.
