اَلْجاهِلُ مَنِ اسْتَغَشَّ النَّصيحَ۔
An ignorant person is one who takes his sincere advisor to be a deceiver.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: The Ignorant And The Foolish)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. Peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
الجاهل من استغش النصيحة
which translates to
An ignorant person is one who takes his sincere advisor to be a deceiver.
This profound statement by Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the importance of recognizing and valuing sincere advice, and the consequences of disregarding it.
To understand the deeper meaning of this Hadith, let us examine the key words used. The word (jahil) "جاهل" refers to an ignorant person, someone lacking knowledge or understanding. The term (istaghsha) "استغش" means to consider someone as a deceiver or to be deceived by someone. Finally, (an-nasīhah) "النصيحة" refers to sincere advice or counsel given with the intention of benefiting the recipient.
In the Quran, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) emphasizes the importance of seeking knowledge and guidance. In Surah Al-Zumar, Ayah 9, Allah says,
Are those who know equal to those who do not know?
This verse highlights the distinction between those who possess knowledge and those who are ignorant. It reminds us that seeking knowledge is a fundamental aspect of our faith.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Hujurat, Ayah 6, Allah warns against spreading rumors and misinformation. He says,
O you who have believed, if there comes to you a disobedient one with information, investigate, lest you harm a people out of ignorance and become, over what you have done, regretful.
This verse emphasizes the importance of verifying information and not jumping to conclusions based on hearsay or false assumptions.
Now, let us delve into the exegesis of the Hadith itself. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), known for his immense knowledge and wisdom, highlights the foolishness of disregarding sincere advice. An ignorant person, according to Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), is one who fails to recognize the value of a sincere advisor and instead perceives them as deceitful.
This Hadith serves as a reminder for Muslims to be open to guidance and counsel from those who genuinely have their best interests at heart. It urges us to reflect upon our own attitudes and actions, ensuring that we do not dismiss valuable advice due to our own ignorance or arrogance.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement also highlights the consequences of disregarding sincere advice. By rejecting the counsel of those who genuinely care for our well-being, we risk making uninformed decisions and falling into pitfalls. This can lead to negative outcomes, both in this world and in the hereafter.
To illustrate this, let us consider an example. Imagine a person who is struggling with financial difficulties and receives sincere advice from a trusted friend who is knowledgeable in matters of finance. If this person dismisses the advice and instead follows the advice of someone with questionable intentions, they may end up making poor financial choices that worsen their situation.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a powerful reminder for Muslims to value and seek sincere advice. It warns against the ignorance of disregarding the counsel of those who genuinely have our best interests at heart. By recognizing the importance of seeking knowledge and guidance, we can make informed decisions and avoid the consequences of ignorance. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom to recognize and appreciate sincere advice, and protect us from falling into ignorance.
