Many a war is more beneficial than peace.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: War, Soldiers And Armies)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. All praise is due to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
Many a war is more beneficial than peace.
This enlightening Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the fact that sometimes engaging in war can bring about greater benefits than maintaining peace. To fully comprehend the depth of this statement, let us delve into the meanings of the key words in this Hadith.
The word (harb) "حَرْب" translates to "war" in English. It refers to a state of conflict or armed struggle between two parties. War is often associated with violence and destruction, but Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) reminds us that not all wars are detrimental. In certain situations, war can be a means to achieve justice, defend oneself, or protect the oppressed.
On the other hand, the word (a'wadu) "أعْوَدُ" translates to "more beneficial" or "more advantageous." It signifies that the outcomes or consequences of engaging in war can surpass those of maintaining peace. This implies that there are instances where the benefits of war outweigh the potential harms and losses.
To understand the wisdom behind Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:216),
Fighting has been enjoined upon you while it is hateful to you. But perhaps you hate a thing and it is good for you; and perhaps you love a thing and it is bad for you. And Allah knows, while you know not.
This verse emphasizes that although war may be disliked or detested by individuals, it can still bring about positive outcomes. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) is the All-Knowing and He understands the intricate dynamics of the world. He knows that sometimes engaging in war is necessary to establish justice, protect the weak, and preserve the rights of the oppressed.
Furthermore, in Surah An-Nisa (4:75), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,
And what is wrong with you that you fight not in the cause of Allah and [for] the oppressed among men, women, and children who say, 'Our Lord, take us out of this city of oppressive people and appoint for us from Yourself a protector and appoint for us from Yourself a helper?'
This verse highlights the importance of fighting in the cause of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) to protect the oppressed. It demonstrates that war can be a means to bring about justice and liberation for those who are suffering under oppressive regimes. In such cases, engaging in war becomes a duty and a means of fulfilling the commandments of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement serves as a reminder that peace should not be pursued at the expense of justice and the rights of the oppressed. Sometimes, it is necessary to engage in war to restore balance, protect the weak, and establish a just society. However, it is crucial to approach war with wisdom, restraint, and a deep understanding of the teachings of Islam.
It is important to note that Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) was known for his exceptional knowledge and wisdom. His statement reflects his profound understanding of the complexities of war and peace. As Muslims, we should strive to emulate his wisdom and approach conflicts with a balanced perspective, always seeking to uphold justice and protect the rights of the oppressed.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us that war, in certain circumstances, can bring about greater benefits than peace. This statement is supported by Quranic verses that highlight the importance of fighting in the cause of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) to establish justice and protect the oppressed. However, it is crucial to approach war with wisdom, restraint, and a deep understanding of the teachings of Islam. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) guide us to always seek justice and peace in our actions.
