أحْياكُمْ أحْلَمُكُمْ۔
The most modest among you are the most forbearing among you.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Modesty And Shame)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "أحْياكُمْ أحْلَمُكُمْ," which translates to,
The most modest among you are the most forbearing among you.
This beautiful saying of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the virtue of modesty and its connection to forbearance.
To understand the deeper meaning of this Hadith, let us first examine the key words used. The word (ahlamukum) "أحْلَمُكُمْ" is derived from the root word (hilm) "حلم", which means forbearance, patience, and tolerance. It refers to the ability to control one's anger and respond to difficult situations with calmness and wisdom. On the other hand, the word (ahyakum) "أحْياكُمْ" is derived from the root word (hayat) "حياة", which means modesty, humility, and gentleness. It signifies the quality of being humble and unassuming in one's demeanor and behavior.
To further elucidate the significance of this Hadith, let us turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Hujurat (49:13),
O mankind, indeed We have created you from male and female and made you peoples and tribes that you may know one another. Indeed, the most noble of you in the sight of Allah is the most righteous of you. Indeed, Allah is Knowing and Acquainted.
This verse emphasizes that the true measure of nobility and superiority lies in righteousness and piety, not in wealth, lineage, or worldly status. It aligns with the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), which highlights that the most modest among us, those who possess humility and gentleness, are the ones who possess the greatest forbearance.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Furqan (25:63), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) describes the characteristics of the servants of the Most Merciful, saying,
And the servants of the Most Merciful are those who walk upon the earth easily, and when the ignorant address them [harshly], they say [words of] peace.
This verse emphasizes the importance of responding to ignorance and harshness with peace and tranquility. It encourages believers to embody the qualities of modesty and forbearance, just as Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) advised. By doing so, we not only uphold our own dignity but also contribute to a peaceful and harmonious society.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement holds profound wisdom and practical implications for our daily lives. When we practice modesty and humility, we are more likely to exercise patience and tolerance in dealing with others. Instead of reacting impulsively or with anger, we respond with wisdom and calmness. This approach not only diffuses conflicts but also allows us to maintain our own inner peace and spiritual growth.
Moreover, the Hadith serves as a reminder that true strength lies in controlling our emotions and responding to challenges with grace. It teaches us that forbearance is a virtue that requires self-discipline and self-control. By embodying this quality, we can build stronger relationships, resolve disputes amicably, and foster a sense of unity within the Muslim community.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ),
The most modest among you are the most forbearing among you,
highlights the importance of humility and gentleness in cultivating forbearance. It reminds us that true nobility lies in righteousness and piety, not in worldly attributes. By practicing modesty and responding to challenges with patience and tolerance, we can contribute to a more peaceful and harmonious society. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the ability to embody these virtues and follow the teachings of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ).
