Hadith #3070

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "أحْياكُمْ أحْلَمُكُمْ," which translates to,

The most modest among you are the most forbearing among you.

This beautiful saying of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the virtue of modesty and its connection to forbearance.

To understand the deeper meaning of this Hadith, let us first examine the key words used. The word (ahlamukum) "أحْلَمُكُمْ" is derived from the root word (hilm) "حلم", which means forbearance, patience, and tolerance. On the other hand, the word (ahyakum) "أحْياكُمْ" is derived from the root word (hayat) "حياة", which means modesty, humility, and gentleness. O mankind, indeed We have created you from male and female and made you peoples and tribes that you may know one another. Indeed, the most noble of you in the sight of Allah is the most righteous of you. Indeed, Allah is Knowing and Acquainted.

And the servants of the Most Merciful are those who walk upon the earth easily, and when the ignorant address them [harshly], they say [words of] peace.

This verse emphasizes the importance of responding to ignorance and harshness with peace and tranquility. It encourages believers to embody the qualities of modesty and forbearance, just as Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) advised.
