The best thing by which praise is gained, is generosity; and the thing that draws forth the most abundant, lasting benefits is charity.

— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Generosity)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. Peace and blessings be upon Muhammad, his family, his companions, and the righteous successors.

The provided Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the virtues of generosity and charity. Let us delve into the deeper meaning of this Hadith and explore its significance in light of the Quran.

The first important word in this Hadith is (sakhā') "سَخَاء". It refers to the act of being generous, magnanimous, and open-handed. Generosity is a quality highly praised in Islam, as it reflects the noble character of a believer. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in the Quran, (Quran 76:8-9)

And they give food in spite of love for it to the needy, the orphan, and the captive, [Saying], 'We feed you only for the countenance of Allah. We wish not from you reward or gratitude.'

This verse highlights the selfless nature of generosity and the intention behind it, which should solely be seeking the pleasure of Allah.

The second important word in this Hadith is (sadaqah) "صَدَقَة". It refers to the act of giving charity, both in terms of wealth and kindness. Charity holds immense significance in Islam, as it not only benefits the recipient but also purifies the soul of the giver. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in the Quran, (Quran 9:103)

Take, [O, Muhammad], from their wealth a charity by which you purify them and cause them increase, and invoke [ Allah 's blessings] upon them. Indeed, your invocations are reassurance for them. And Allah is Hearing and Knowing.

This verse highlights the transformative power of charity, both in terms of material and spiritual growth.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states that generosity is the best way to gain praise. When we are generous, we not only benefit others but also earn the respect and admiration of those around us. Our generosity becomes a means through which we are recognized for our noble character and good deeds.

This verse emphasizes that true generosity is not driven by the desire for recognition or praise from others, but solely for the sake of Allah's pleasure.

Furthermore, Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) mentions that charity is the most abundant and lasting source of benefit. When we give in charity, whether it is in the form of financial assistance or acts of kindness, we not only help those in need but also contribute to the betterment of society as a whole. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in the Quran, (Quran 2:261)

The example of those who spend their wealth in the way of Allah is like a seed [of grain] which grows seven spikes; in each spike is a hundred grains. And Allah multiplies [His reward] for whom He wills. And Allah is all-Encompassing and Knowing.

This verse highlights the immense blessings and rewards that come from giving in charity, as Allah multiplies the impact of our good deeds.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the virtues of generosity and charity. By being generous, we not only earn praise and admiration but also contribute to the betterment of society. Charity, in all its forms, is a means of purifying our souls and seeking the pleasure of Allah. Let us strive to embody these qualities and make generosity and charity a fundamental part of our lives as Muslims. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) bless us with the ability to be generous and charitable, and may He accept our efforts and reward us abundantly.
