Hadith #4840

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

كَفى بِالمَرْءِ سَعادَةً أنْ يُوثَقَ بِهِ في أُمُورِ الدّينِ والدُّنيا۔

This Hadith emphasizes the immense value and felicity that comes with being trusted and reliable in both religious and worldly matters.

Let us delve into the key words of this Hadith to gain a deeper understanding. The word (sa'adah) "سَعادَةً" refers to felicity, happiness, and contentment. It signifies a state of well-being and satisfaction. The word (youthaqa) "يُوثَقَ" comes from the root word (thiqah) "ثَقَة", which means trustworthiness and reliability. It implies being entrusted with responsibilities and being relied upon. The phrase (fi umoori ad-din wal-dunya)

في أُمُورِ الدّينِ والدُّنيا

refers to matters pertaining to both religion and worldly affairs.

To understand the significance of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) repeatedly emphasizes the importance of trustworthiness and reliability. In Surah Al-Mu'minun (23:8), Allah describes the characteristics of the successful believers, stating, (And they who are to their trusts and their promises attentive)

وَالَّذِينَ هُمْ لِأَمَانَاتِهِمْ وَعَهْدِهِمْ رَاعُونَ

This verse highlights the significance of fulfilling one's commitments and being trustworthy in fulfilling entrusted responsibilities.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-A'raf (7:157), Allah praises Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) and mentions his qualities, stating, (Those who follow the Messenger, the unlettered prophet, whom they find written in what they have of the Torah and the Gospel, who enjoins upon them what is right and forbids them what is wrong and makes lawful for them the good things and prohibits for them the evil and relieves them of their burden and the shackles which were upon them. So they who have believed in him, honored him, supported him and followed the light which was sent down with him - it is those who will be the successful)

الَّذِينَ يَتَّبِعُونَ الرَّسُولَ النَّبِيَّ الْأُمِّيَّ الَّذِي يَجِدُونَهُ مَكْتُوبًا عِندَهُمْ فِي التَّوْرَاةِ وَالْإِنجِيلِ يَأْمُرُهُم بِالْمَعْرُوفِ وَيَنْهَاهُمْ عَنِ الْمُنكَرِ وَيُحِلُّ لَهُمُ الطَّيِّبَاتِ وَيُحَرِّمُ عَلَيْهِمُ الْخَبَائِثَ وَيَضَعُ عَنْهُمْ إِصْرَهُمْ وَالْأَغْلَالَ الَّتِي كَانَتْ عَلَيْهِمْ ۚ فَالَّذِينَ آمَنُوا بِهِ وَعَزَّرُوهُ وَنَصَرُوهُ وَاتَّبَعُوا النُّورَ الَّذِي أُنزِلَ مَعَهُ ۙ أُولَٰئِكَ هُمُ الْمُفْلِحُونَ

This verse highlights the qualities of Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), who was entrusted with the message of Islam. He was known for his trustworthiness, as he fulfilled his responsibilities and guided the people towards righteousness. His trustworthiness extended to both religious matters, as he conveyed the message of Allah, and worldly matters, as he governed the affairs of the Muslim community.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), being the rightful successor of Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) and the embodiment of his teachings, possessed immense knowledge and wisdom. He was known for his trustworthiness and reliability in both religious and worldly matters. His knowledge of the Quran and his understanding of its teachings allowed him to guide the Muslim community with wisdom and justice.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the importance of trustworthiness and reliability in all aspects of life. When a person is deemed trustworthy, they are entrusted with responsibilities, and this trust brings about felicity and contentment. Trustworthiness in religious matters ensures the preservation and propagation of the true teachings of Islam, while trustworthiness in worldly matters leads to the establishment of justice and fairness in society.
