دَوامُ الغَفْلَةِ يُعْمِى البَصيرَةَ۔
Continuous negligence blinds insight.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Negligence)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
دَوامُ الغَفْلَةِ يُعْمِى البَصيرَةَ۔
This can be translated as
Continuous negligence blinds insight.
Let us delve into the meaning of the key words in this Hadith. "دَوامُ" refers to continuity or persistence. "الغَفْلَةِ" refers to negligence or heedlessness. And "يُعْمِى" means to blind or darken. Lastly, "البَصيرَةَ" refers to insight or perception.
To understand the beautiful message of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-A'raf (7:179),
And We have certainly created for Hell many of the jinn and mankind. They have hearts with which they do not understand, they have eyes with which they do not see, and they have ears with which they do not hear. Those are like livestock; rather, they are more astray. It is they who are the heedless.
This verse highlights the consequence of continuous negligence, which is a spiritual blindness that affects one's perception and understanding. When a person becomes heedless and neglectful of their spiritual duties, their heart becomes hardened, their eyes fail to see the truth, and their ears become deaf to the guidance of Allah. They are likened to livestock, devoid of true insight and wandering aimlessly.
Another verse that sheds light on the significance of this Hadith is found in Surah Al-An'am (6:104), where Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,
There has come to you enlightenment from your Lord. So whoever will see does so for [the benefit of] his soul, and whoever is blind [does harm] against it. And [say], 'I am not a guardian over you.'
This verse emphasizes the importance of seeking enlightenment and insight from Allah. Those who strive to see the truth and understand the deeper meanings of life benefit their own souls. On the other hand, those who remain blind to the signs of Allah and fail to seek knowledge and understanding harm themselves. The responsibility to seek guidance lies with each individual, and no one can force another to see the truth.
Reflecting on the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), we can understand that continuous negligence in fulfilling our religious obligations and neglecting our spiritual growth can lead to a gradual loss of insight and understanding. When we become complacent and fail to nourish our souls with the remembrance of Allah, our perception of truth becomes clouded, and we are unable to discern between right and wrong.
The consequences of this negligence are far-reaching. We may find ourselves falling into sinful behaviors, making poor decisions, and losing sight of our purpose in life. Our relationships with Allah, ourselves, and others may suffer as a result. It is therefore essential for us as Muslims to remain vigilant and continuously strive to strengthen our connection with Allah, seeking knowledge, and engaging in acts of worship and reflection.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a reminder for Muslims of the detrimental effects of continuous negligence. It warns us that neglecting our spiritual obligations can lead to a gradual loss of insight and understanding. By seeking enlightenment from Allah and remaining steadfast in our faith, we can safeguard our hearts, minds, and souls from the darkness of heedlessness. May Allah grant us the wisdom and guidance to remain vigilant and protect our insight.
