Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

مَنْ كَثُرَ سَخَطُهُ لَمْ يُعْتَبْ۔

This can be translated as,

One whose displeasure is much is not admonished.

Let us delve into the connotation of this Hadith in light of the Quran.

The word (sakhathuhu) "سَخَطُهُ" in this Hadith refers to one's displeasure or anger. It signifies a state of being upset or annoyed. The word (lam yu'tab) "لَمْ يُعْتَبْ" means not being admonished or not being held accountable for one's actions.

To understand the deeper meaning of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. In Surah Al-Imran (3:134), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,

Those who spend [in Allah's cause] during ease and hardship and who restrain anger and who pardon the people - and Allah loves the doers of good.

This verse emphasizes the importance of controlling one's anger and being forgiving towards others. It teaches us that those who can control their anger and forgive others are beloved to Allah.

Another verse that sheds light on the significance of controlling one's anger is found in Surah Ash-Shura (42:37), where Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,

And those who avoid the major sins and immoralities, and when they are angry, they forgive.

This verse highlights the virtue of forgiveness, even in moments of anger. It encourages us to rise above our emotions and respond with patience and forgiveness.

Now, let us reflect on the profound wisdom behind Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement. The Hadith teaches us that one who frequently becomes displeased or angry is not admonished. This means that such a person is not held accountable for their actions because their anger clouds their judgment and prevents them from making rational decisions.

When a person allows their anger to control them, they often act impulsively and say or do things that they later regret. They may hurt others with their words or actions, causing harm and discord in their relationships. This lack of self-control can lead to a breakdown of trust and harmony within communities and families.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), known for his immense wisdom and knowledge, reminds us of the importance of self-restraint and the need to control our anger. By doing so, we can avoid the negative consequences that arise from acting out of anger. Instead, we should strive to respond to provocation with patience, forgiveness, and understanding.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us the significance of controlling our anger and displeasure. It reminds us that those who frequently become angry are not held accountable for their actions because their judgment is clouded by their emotions. The Quranic verses mentioned reinforce this message, emphasizing the virtues of forgiveness and restraint. As Muslims, we should strive to emulate the teachings of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) and the guidance of the Quran, seeking to control our anger and respond with patience and forgiveness. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the strength and wisdom to do so.
