لاتُشْرِكَنَّ في رَأْيِكَ جَباناً يُضَعِّفُكَ عَنِ الأمْرِ، ويُعَظِّمُ عَلَيْكَ ما لَيْسَ بِعَظيم۔

Never include a coward in your consultation as he will weaken your resolve in the matter and [will] make a mountain out of a mole hill.

Never include a coward in your consultation as he will weaken your resolve...

— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Consultation And Deliberation)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. All praise is due to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. Peace and blessings be upon the Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

In this profound hadith, Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) advises Muslims to refrain from seeking the counsel of a coward when making important decisions. The Imam warns against including someone who lacks courage and determination in matters that require strength and resolve. He cautions that such an individual will only weaken one's resolve and exaggerate insignificant issues, making them appear larger and more daunting than they actually are.

To fully comprehend the depth of this hadith, it is important to analyze the key words and phrases used by Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ). The word (jabān) "جَبَان" refers to a coward or someone lacking bravery and courage. The term (yuḍaʿʿifu-ka) "يُضَعِّفُكَ" means to weaken or undermine, while (yuʿaẓẓimu) "يُعَظِّمُ" means to magnify or exaggerate. Finally, (mā laysa biʿaẓīm) "مَا لَيْسَ بِعَظِيم" translates to

what is not great

or

what is not significant.

To further elucidate the wisdom behind this hadith, let us turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) repeatedly emphasizes the importance of courage, determination, and steadfastness in the face of challenges. In Surah Al-Anfal (8:46), Allah says,

And obey Allah and His Messenger, and do not dispute and [thus] lose courage and [then] your strength would depart; and be patient. Indeed, Allah is with the patient.

This verse highlights the detrimental effects of losing courage and strength, as it leads to disputes and discord among Muslims. Similarly, in Surah Al-Imran (3:175), Allah reminds us,

It is only Satan that suggests to you the fear of his allies. So, fear them not, but fear Me, if you are [indeed] believers.

This verse encourages believers to overcome fear and not be influenced by the cowardice of others. It emphasizes the importance of placing trust in Allah and relying on His guidance rather than succumbing to fear and weakness.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) hadith serves as a practical application of these Quranic teachings. When seeking advice or making important decisions, it is crucial to surround oneself with individuals who possess the qualities of bravery, determination, and resilience. By doing so, one can ensure that their resolve remains strong and unwavering, enabling them to face challenges with confidence and steadfastness.

Including a coward in consultations can have detrimental consequences. Their lack of courage and determination may lead to hesitation, indecisiveness, and a distorted perception of the situation at hand. They may magnify minor obstacles, making them appear insurmountable and hindering progress. This can ultimately hinder the success and effectiveness of any endeavor.

On the other hand, seeking the counsel of individuals who possess strength of character and unwavering resolve can have profound positive effects. Their courage and determination will inspire and motivate others, enabling them to overcome challenges and achieve success. Their rational and balanced perspective will help in accurately assessing the situation and making sound decisions.

In conclusion, Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) hadith serves as a timeless reminder for Muslims to carefully select their advisors and companions. It highlights the importance of surrounding oneself with individuals who possess courage, determination, and a balanced perspective. By doing so, Muslims can ensure that their resolve remains strong and unwavering, enabling them to face challenges with confidence and overcome obstacles in their path. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom to choose our companions wisely and the strength to face challenges with courage and determination.
