Hadith #1804

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure Ahl al-Bayt, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

مَنْ لَمْ يَسْمَحْ لَمْ يَسُدْ۔

This can be translated as,

One who does not give generously does not gain authority.

Let us delve into the deeper meanings of this beautiful saying in light of the Quran. The word (samaḥ) "سَمَحْ" in this Hadith refers to generosity, benevolence, and magnanimity. It encompasses the act of giving freely and abundantly, without any expectation of return. The word (yasud) "يَسُدْ" means to gain authority, control, or power. It implies that one who does not possess the quality of generosity will not attain a position of influence or leadership.

The Quran emphasizes the importance of generosity and giving in numerous verses. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:261),

The example of those who spend their wealth in the way of Allah is like a seed [of grain] which grows seven spikes; in each spike is a hundred grains. And Allah multiplies [His reward] for whom He wills. And Allah is all-Encompassing and Knowing.

This verse highlights the concept of giving generously and the abundant rewards that come with it.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:274), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states,

Those who spend their wealth [in Allah's way] by night and by day, secretly and publicly - they will have their reward with their Lord. And no fear will there be concerning them, nor will they grieve.

This verse emphasizes the virtue of giving selflessly, both openly and in secret, and assures the believers of the immense rewards awaiting them.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement highlights the connection between generosity and authority. It suggests that true leadership and authority can only be attained by those who possess the quality of generosity. This is because generosity reflects a selfless and compassionate nature, which are essential qualities for effective leadership.

When a leader is generous, they inspire trust and loyalty among their followers. They create an environment of inclusivity and fairness, where everyone feels valued and cared for. Such leaders are able to build strong relationships and foster unity within their communities. They are respected and admired for their ability to prioritize the needs of others above their own.

Conversely, a leader who lacks generosity may be perceived as selfish and self-centered. They may prioritize personal gain over the welfare of their followers, leading to a breakdown in trust and unity. Such leaders may struggle to gain the respect and support of those they seek to lead.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement serves as a reminder for Muslims to embody the quality of generosity in their lives. It encourages us to give freely and abundantly, not only in terms of material wealth but also in terms of our time, knowledge, and compassion. By doing so, we not only benefit others but also strengthen our own character and increase our chances of attaining positions of influence and authority.
