مَنْ أساءَ إلى نَفْسِهِ لَمْ يُتَوَقَّعْ مِنْهُ جَمِيلٌ۔
Whoever wrongs his [own] soul, no goodness is expected from him.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: The Soul And Holding It To Account)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, the Ahl al-Bayt, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
مَنْ أساءَ إلى نَفْسِهِ لَمْ يُتَوَقَّعْ مِنْهُ جَمِيلٌ۔
This Hadith can be translated as,
Whoever wrongs his [own] soul, no goodness is expected from him.
Let us delve into the key words of this Hadith. The word (asa'a) "أساءَ" means to do wrong or to harm. It refers to the actions and behaviors that are detrimental to oneself. The word (nafsihi) "نَفْسِهِ" means one's own soul or self. It signifies the individual's inner being and their spiritual essence. Lastly, the word (jameel) "جَمِيلٌ" means goodness or beauty. It represents all that is virtuous, righteous, and praiseworthy.
To understand the connotation of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Baqarah, verse 286,
Allah does not burden a soul beyond that it can bear.
This verse reminds us that Allah has created us with the capacity to make choices and take responsibility for our actions. We have been given free will, and it is our duty to use it wisely.
When Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states that
Whoever wrongs his [own] soul, no goodness is expected from him,
he is emphasizing the importance of self-accountability. Each individual has the power to shape their own destiny through their actions. If someone consistently engages in harmful behavior, whether it be physical, emotional, or spiritual, they are essentially undermining their own potential for goodness.
The consequences of wronging one's own soul are multifaceted. Firstly, it leads to a deterioration of one's character and moral compass. When a person continuously engages in negative actions, it becomes a habit that is difficult to break. This habit can lead to a downward spiral, distancing the individual from the path of righteousness and preventing them from achieving their full potential.
Secondly, wronging one's own soul can have detrimental effects on one's relationships with others. When a person consistently engages in harmful behavior towards themselves, it often spills over into their interactions with others. They may become more prone to anger, jealousy, and selfishness, which can damage their relationships and hinder their ability to contribute positively to society.
Furthermore, wronging one's own soul can have spiritual consequences. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Isra, verse 84,
And say: 'My Lord! Cause me to enter a sound entrance and to exit a sound exit. And grant me from Yourself a supporting authority.'
This verse highlights the importance of seeking Allah's guidance and protection in all aspects of our lives. When we wrong our own souls, we distance ourselves from the divine support and guidance that Allah offers us.
Reflecting on this Hadith, we are reminded of the importance of self-reflection and self-improvement. It is incumbent upon each Muslim to strive towards goodness and righteousness, both for the betterment of themselves and for the benefit of society as a whole. By avoiding actions that harm our own souls, we pave the way for personal growth, spiritual enlightenment, and a positive impact on those around us.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a powerful reminder of the consequences of wronging one's own soul. It highlights the importance of self-accountability and the need to strive towards goodness and righteousness. By aligning our actions with the teachings of the Quran and the guidance of the Ahl al-Bayt, we can cultivate a virtuous character and contribute positively to our own lives and the lives of others. May Allah guide us all on the path of righteousness and grant us the strength to avoid wronging our own souls.
