إذا رَأيْتَ اللّهَ يُؤْنِسُكَ بِذِكْرِهِ فَقَدْ أحَبَّكَ۔
When you see that Allah is making you comfortable with His remembrance, then [know that] He loves you.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Remembrance [Of Allah] And The Reminder)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. Peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, the Ahl al-Bayt, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
إذا رَأيْتَ اللّهَ يُؤْنِسُكَ بِذِكْرِهِ فَقَدْ أحَبَّكَ۔
This Hadith emphasizes the profound love and affection that Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) has for His servant when He grants them the comfort and solace of His remembrance.
The word (yu'nisk) "يُؤْنِسُكَ" in the Hadith refers to the act of making someone feel at ease, comfortable, and intimate. It signifies a deep connection and closeness between the servant and Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). When Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grants His servant the tranquility and contentment that comes from remembering Him, it is a clear indication of His love for that individual.
This concept of Allah's love for His servants is beautifully reflected in the Quran. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:165),
And [yet], among the people are those who take other than Allah as equals [to Him]. They love them as they [should] love Allah. But those who believe are stronger in love for Allah.
This verse highlights the distinction between the love of those who associate partners with Allah and the love of the believers. The believers' love for Allah surpasses any other love, and it is this love that brings them closer to Him.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Imran (3:31), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states,
Say, [O Muhammad], 'If you should love Allah, then follow me, [so] Allah will love you and forgive you your sins. And Allah is Forgiving and Merciful.'
This verse emphasizes the importance of following the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) in order to attain Allah's love. When a person sincerely follows the Prophet's (ﷺ) guidance, they are demonstrating their love for Allah, and in return, Allah showers His love and forgiveness upon them.
Now, coming back to the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), when a person experiences the serenity and joy that comes from remembering Allah, it is a sign that Allah loves them. This love is not merely a superficial emotion but a deep connection that brings immense blessings and rewards. When Allah loves a servant, He guides them towards righteousness, protects them from harm, and grants them success in this world and the hereafter.
The comfort and solace that one feels in the remembrance of Allah can manifest in various ways. It could be through the recitation of the Quran, engaging in supplications (dua), performing acts of worship, or simply reflecting upon the signs of Allah's creation. When a person's heart is filled with the remembrance of Allah, their worries and anxieties fade away, and they find solace in the presence of their Creator.
This Hadith serves as a reminder for Muslims to strive for a deep and intimate connection with Allah through His remembrance. It encourages us to seek His love and pleasure by constantly remembering Him in our daily lives. When we prioritize the remembrance of Allah, we open the doors to His love, mercy, and guidance.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us that when we experience the comfort and solace of Allah's remembrance, it is a clear indication of His love for us. It reminds us of the importance of constantly remembering Allah and seeking His love and pleasure. May Allah grant us the ability to remember Him sincerely and may His love be a guiding light in our lives.
