Hadith #5784

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. May peace and blessings be upon the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The provided Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the rewards and benefits that come with being truthful. Let us delve into the exegesis of this enlightening saying and explore its significance in the light of the Quran.

The first word we will examine is (sidqih) "صِدْقِهِ", which translates to "his honesty" or "his truthfulness." Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) emphasizes the significance of truthfulness in the Quran in several verses. In Surah Al-Tawbah (9:119), Allah says,

O you who have believed, fear Allah and be with those who are true.

This verse encourages Muslims to be in the company of those who are truthful, as their sincerity and honesty will have a positive influence on others.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Ahzab (33:35), Allah praises the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) by saying,

Indeed, the Muslim men and Muslim women, the believing men and believing women, the obedient men and obedient women, the truthful men and truthful women, the patient men and patient women, the humble men and humble women, the charitable men and charitable women, the fasting men and fasting women, and the men who remember Allah often and the women who do so - for them Allah has prepared forgiveness and a great reward.

This verse highlights the importance of truthfulness and includes it among the qualities that Allah rewards greatly.

The Hadith also mentions three rewards that the truthful one earns with his honesty. The first reward is (husnith-thiqati bihi) "حُسْنِ الثِّقَةِ بِهِ", which means

the virtue of being considered reliable.

When a person consistently speaks the truth and acts with integrity, they earn the trust and confidence of others. People rely on them and consider them to be trustworthy. This trustworthiness is a valuable asset in personal relationships, professional endeavors, and societal interactions.

The Quran emphasizes the importance of trustworthiness in Surah Al-Ma'idah (5:1), where Allah says,

O you who have believed, fulfill [all] contracts.

Fulfilling contracts and being trustworthy in our dealings is a manifestation of truthfulness and integrity. It is a means to establish a just and harmonious society.

The second reward mentioned in the Hadith is (wal-mahabbata lahu) "وَالمَحَبَّةَ لَهُ", which means "becoming beloved." When a person consistently speaks the truth and acts with sincerity, they attract the love and affection of others. Truthfulness is a quality that resonates with the hearts of people, as it reflects transparency, reliability, and genuine care for others. The love and affection earned through truthfulness create strong bonds of friendship, unity, and harmony within the community.

Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) encourages love and affection among believers in Surah Al-Hujurat (49:10), stating,

The believers are but brothers, so make settlement between your brothers. And fear Allah that you may receive mercy.

Truthfulness plays a crucial role in fostering brotherhood and unity among Muslims, as it builds trust and strengthens the bonds of love and compassion.

The third reward mentioned in the Hadith is (wal-mahabata 'anhu) "وَالمَهَابَةَ عَنْهُ", which means "being revered." When a person consistently upholds truthfulness, they earn respect and admiration from others. Their words carry weight, and their actions become a source of inspiration for those around them. This reverence is a result of the recognition of their integrity, wisdom, and knowledge.

In the Quran, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) highlights the importance of knowledge and wisdom in Surah Al-Zumar (39:9), stating,

Are those who know equal to those who do not know?

Knowledge and wisdom are qualities that elevate individuals and earn them respect and reverence in society. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), known for his immense knowledge and wisdom, exemplified this quality through his truthfulness and became revered by Muslims throughout history.
