Verily your tongue demands from you that which you have made it accustomed...

— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: The Tongue)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

In this profound Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), he states,

Verily your tongue demands from you that which you have made it accustomed to.

Let us delve into the deeper meaning of this statement and explore its significance in light of the Quran.

The word (lisānak) "لِسانَكَ" in Arabic refers to the tongue, which is a powerful tool of communication. It is through our tongues that we express our thoughts, beliefs, and emotions. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the significance of our tongues by stating that they have certain demands from us. These demands are shaped by our habits and the way we have accustomed our tongues to speak.

The word (yaqtaḍīka) "يَقْتَضيكَ" comes from the root word (qaḍā) "قَضَى", which means to demand or require. It implies that our tongues have a certain inclination or tendency towards the way we have trained them to speak. Our speech patterns, vocabulary, and tone are all influenced by the habits we have developed over time.

To understand the profound wisdom behind this Hadith, let us turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Isra (17:36),

And do not pursue that of which you have no knowledge. Indeed, the hearing, the sight and the heart - about all those [one] will be questioned.

This verse reminds us of the importance of being mindful of what we say, as our words will be questioned on the Day of Judgment.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Qalam (68:10), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) warns,

Indeed, your Lord is in observation.

This verse serves as a reminder that Allah is aware of every word we utter, and we will be held accountable for our speech.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement emphasizes the responsibility we have towards our tongues. Our tongues have the power to either bring us closer to Allah or distance us from Him. If we have accustomed our tongues to speak falsehood, backbiting, or harsh words, then our tongues will demand more of the same. On the other hand, if we have trained our tongues to speak truth, kindness, and words of wisdom, then our tongues will demand more virtuous speech.

This Hadith serves as a powerful reminder for Muslims to reflect upon their speech and strive for excellence in their communication. It encourages us to be mindful of the words we choose, the tone we use, and the impact our speech has on others. Our words have the power to uplift, inspire, and bring people closer to Allah, or they can cause harm, spread negativity, and distance people from the path of righteousness.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) beautiful Hadith should motivate us to reflect on our speech habits and make a conscious effort to improve them. We should strive to speak the truth, avoid gossip and backbiting, and use our tongues to spread kindness, love, and wisdom. By doing so, we can align our tongues with the teachings of the Quran and the example set by our beloved Prophet Muhammad () and his noble companions.

In conclusion, Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith reminds us of the power and responsibility we have towards our tongues. It urges us to be mindful of our speech habits and strive for excellence in our communication. By aligning our tongues with the teachings of the Quran, we can fulfill the demands of our tongues in a way that brings us closer to Allah and benefits our fellow Muslims. May Allah guide us in using our tongues wisely and may He grant us the ability to speak words that are pleasing to Him.
