Hadith #1025

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

In this profound Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), he advises us to be cautious and vigilant regarding any matter that may corrupt our Hereafter while seemingly benefiting our worldly life. Let us delve deeper into the words of this Hadith and explore its meaning in light of the Quran.

The key words in this Hadith are (matter) "أمْر", (ruins) "يُفْسِدُ", (Hereafter) "الآجِلَةَ", and (improves) "يُصْلِحُ" (worldly life) "الدَّانيةَ".

The word "أمْر" refers to any affair, action, or decision that we undertake in our lives. It encompasses all aspects of our existence, be it personal, social, or spiritual. It reminds us that every action we take has consequences, both in this world and in the Hereafter.

The word "يُفْسِدُ" means to corrupt, spoil, or ruin. It signifies any action or matter that leads to the destruction or deterioration of our Hereafter. It serves as a warning against engaging in activities that are sinful, immoral, or detrimental to our spiritual well-being.

The term "الآجِلَةَ" refers to the Hereafter, the eternal life that awaits us after death. It is the realm where we will be held accountable for our actions and where our ultimate destiny will be determined. It is a reminder that our focus should be on preparing for the everlasting life rather than being consumed by the temporary pleasures of this world.

On the other hand, the word "يُصْلِحُ" means to improve, rectify, or benefit. It highlights actions or matters that bring about positive outcomes in our worldly life. It reminds us that Islam encourages us to lead a balanced life, where we strive for success in both this world and the Hereafter.

The term "الدَّانيةَ" refers to the worldly life, the transient existence that we experience in this world. It encompasses our material possessions, social relationships, and worldly achievements. It serves as a reminder that while we are allowed to enjoy the blessings of this world, we should not become attached to it to the extent that it distracts us from our ultimate purpose.

To understand the profound wisdom behind this Hadith, let us turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) repeatedly emphasizes the importance of prioritizing the Hereafter over the worldly life. In Surah Al-Baqarah, Allah says, (2: 110)

But seek, through that which Allah has given you, the home of the Hereafter; and [yet], do not forget your share of the world. And do good as Allah has done good to you. And desire not corruption in the land. Indeed, Allah does not like corrupters

This verse reminds us that while we should strive for success and prosperity in this world, our ultimate goal should be the Hereafter. We should not forget our responsibilities towards our worldly affairs, but we should also be mindful of not indulging in corruption or sinful activities that may harm our Hereafter.

Another verse that supports the message of this Hadith is found in Surah Al-Kahf, where Allah says, (18: 45)

And present to them the example of the life of this world, [its being] like rain which We send down from the sky, and the vegetation of the earth mingles with it and [then] it becomes dry remnants, scattered by the winds. And Allah is ever, over all things, Perfect in Ability

This verse beautifully illustrates the transient nature of the worldly life. Just as rain brings temporary growth and prosperity to the earth, our worldly possessions and achievements are also temporary and fleeting. Therefore, we should not become attached to them to the extent that we neglect our spiritual growth and preparation for the Hereafter.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) advice in this Hadith serves as a reminder for us to constantly evaluate our actions and decisions. We should strive to strike a balance between our worldly responsibilities and our spiritual obligations. While it is important to work hard and achieve success in this world, we should never compromise our Hereafter for temporary gains.

This Hadith encourages us to reflect on the consequences of our actions and to prioritize our eternal life over the temporary pleasures of this world. It reminds us to be cautious and vigilant in our choices, ensuring that they align with the teachings of Islam and contribute to our spiritual growth.

May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom to discern between what benefits our Hereafter and what harms it.
