يَسِّرُُوا وَلا تُعَسِّرُوا، وخَفِّفُوا ولا تُثَقِّلُوا۔
Make [matters] easy and not arduous; make [them] light and not strenuous.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Matters)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. All praise is due to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
Make [matters] easy and not arduous; make [them] light and not strenuous.
This enlightening saying emphasizes the importance of simplicity and ease in our actions and dealings. Let us delve deeper into the words of this Hadith and explore its significance in light of the teachings of the Quran.
The first word to focus on is (yassiru) "يَسِّرُُوا", which means to make things easy or facilitate. This word highlights the importance of removing unnecessary complexities and obstacles from our lives. It encourages us to adopt a mindset of simplicity and efficiency, making it easier for ourselves and others to navigate through various tasks and challenges.
The second word is (tu'assiru) "تُعَسِّرُوا", which means to make things difficult or burdensome. This word serves as a reminder to avoid unnecessary complications and hardships. It urges us to refrain from imposing unnecessary restrictions or burdens on ourselves and others, as this can lead to discouragement, frustration, and even failure.
The third word is (khaffifu) "خَفِّفُوا", which means to make things light or reduce their weight. This word encourages us to lighten the load, both physically and metaphorically. It reminds us to simplify our tasks, responsibilities, and expectations, making them more manageable and less overwhelming. By doing so, we can achieve a sense of balance and harmony in our lives.
The fourth word is (tuthaqqilu) "تُثَقِّلُوا", which means to make things heavy or increase their weight. This word cautions against burdening ourselves and others with unnecessary complexities and excessive demands. It reminds us that overwhelming tasks and responsibilities can lead to stress, burnout, and a loss of motivation. Therefore, we should strive to avoid such situations and instead seek a balanced approach in all aspects of our lives.
The teachings of the Quran support the wisdom contained in this Hadith. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:286),
Allah does not burden a soul beyond that it can bear.
This verse reassures us that Allah is aware of our capabilities and does not burden us with more than we can handle. It emphasizes the importance of moderation and balance in our actions and decisions.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-A'raf (7:42), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) advises Prophet Musa (Moses) to speak to Pharaoh in a gentle and lenient manner, saying,
Speak to him with gentle speech; perhaps he may be reminded or fear [Allah].
This verse highlights the power of softness and ease in conveying messages effectively. It teaches us that by approaching others with kindness and simplicity, we can have a greater impact on their hearts and minds.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) encourages us to adopt a mindset of simplicity, ease, and balance in all aspects of our lives. By making things easy and light, we can enhance our productivity, reduce stress, and foster a sense of tranquility. This approach not only benefits us individually but also positively impacts our relationships with others, creating an environment of harmony and cooperation.
For example, in our daily interactions, we can strive to communicate with kindness and clarity, avoiding unnecessary complications and misunderstandings.
