مَنْ مَدَحَكَ بِما لَيْسَ فيكَ فَهُوَ خَليقٌ أنْ يَذُمُّكَ بِما لَيْسَ فيكَ۔
One who praises you for what is not in you is indeed likely to blame you for that which you have not done.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Praise And Extolment)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
One who praises you for what is not in you is indeed likely to blame you for that which you have not done.
This thought-provoking saying highlights the importance of sincerity and truthfulness in our interactions and judgments. It warns us against the dangers of false praise and the potential harm it can cause.
Let us delve deeper into the key words of this Hadith to gain a better understanding. The word (madahaka) "مَدَحَكَ" means to praise or commend someone. It implies expressing admiration or approval for a person's qualities or actions. The word (khaliq) "خَليقٌ" refers to someone who is inclined or likely to do something. And the word (yadhumuka) "يَذُمُّكَ" means to blame or criticize someone.
To comprehend the profound wisdom of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Hujurat (49:11),
O you who have believed, let not a people ridicule [another] people; perhaps they may be better than them; nor let women ridicule [other] women; perhaps they may be better than them. And do not insult one another and do not call each other by [offensive] nicknames. Wretched is the name of disobedience after [one's] faith. And whoever does not repent - then it is those who are the wrongdoers.
This verse emphasizes the importance of not ridiculing or insulting others, as it can lead to harm and injustice. It reminds us to be cautious in our judgments and to avoid making false assumptions about others. Similarly, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) warns against praising someone for qualities they do not possess, as it can lead to false perceptions and expectations.
Another verse that resonates with the message of this Hadith is found in Surah Al-Isra (17:36), where Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,
And do not pursue that of which you have no knowledge. Indeed, the hearing, the sight and the heart - about all those [one] will be questioned.
This verse reminds us of the importance of seeking knowledge and understanding before forming opinions or making judgments. It cautions against blindly following hearsay or baseless praise, as it can lead to misunderstandings and unfair judgments. Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith echoes this sentiment by highlighting the potential consequences of false praise.
The exegesis of this Hadith is profound and multifaceted. It serves as a reminder for Muslims to be sincere in their interactions and judgments. It urges us to refrain from praising others for qualities they do not possess, as it can lead to false perceptions and expectations. Moreover, it warns against the potential harm that can arise from such false praise, as it may result in unjust blame for actions one has not committed.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) possessed immense knowledge and wisdom, and his words continue to guide and inspire Muslims to this day. This Hadith encourages us to be cautious in our judgments, to seek knowledge before forming opinions, and to be sincere and truthful in our interactions. By adhering to these principles, we can foster a more harmonious and just society, where individuals are valued for their true qualities and actions. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom to understand and implement the teachings of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) in our lives.
